The Iron Lady was more than just a fabulous blowdry

Wishy-washy and unfocused, Phyllida Lloyd's Margaret Thatcher biopic fails to embody the indomitable spirit of its subject

Director: Phyllida Lloyd

Entertainment grade: C+

History grade: C

Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990.

Structure

The Iron Lady tells its story as a series of flashbacks experienced by the ageing Thatcher (Meryl Streep), suffering from dementia and haunted by the imagined ghost of her late husband, Denis (Jim Broadbent). Streep is terrific, carrying off Thatcher in her prime and Thatcher in her dotage with equal aplomb. Regrettably, however, so much of the film's screentime has been devoted to the dotage – and so many of the flashbacks are, unlike Thatcher herself, preoccupied with her role as a wife and mother – that little time is left for the interesting stuff. A few of those who are relegated to blink-and-you'll-miss-'em status, or don't appear at all: Cecil Parkinson, Nigel Lawson, »

5. “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” Fight at the Baptism – Like a scene straight out of “The Godfather,” “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” cast treated viewers to a full-out family brawl after the christening of Melissa and Joe Gorga’s son. Complete with flying fists, wailing children, shouting and a near-heart attack, this fight set the tone for the entire season. 4. Paisley Dresses Up As Julia Roberts' “Pretty Woman”Character on “Toddlers and Tiaras” – The little girls of “Toddlers & Tiaras” have worn all kinds of extravagant dresses, hairpieces, fake teeth, tiaras and more. Paisley definitely took the cake though when she appeared in competition dressed as the street-walking version of Julia Roberts’ character in “Pretty Woman.” Oh dear. 3. “The Situation” Knocks Himself Out on “Jersey Shore” – After three seasons of madness, we didn’t really think anything could shock us when it came to the antics of the “Jersey Shore” cast. »

Julia Roberts Featured in New Posters for Mirror, Mirror

20 December 2011 7:33 AM, PST | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

Did you know Julia Roberts stars in Tarsem Singh’s Snow White movie, Mirror, Mirror? If not, I’m sure the new posters will clue you in on that tiny detail. The question is, does Roberts mind having her face associated with this fairy tale turd?

Maybe it’s a contract thing because I would want to distance myself from this spectacular mess as much as possible. Did you see the trailer? I know this isn’t supposed to rival Snow White and the Huntsman but come on. I’ve seen animated shows that look more realistic than this thing.

Lily Collins, who plays Snow White, actually gets a little face time in one of the new promos but the studio obviously wants to push this as a Julia Roberts vehicle. My, how far has the former Pretty Woman fallen?

I guess it’s possible the movie might actually surprise me… »

Elizondo Braved The Cold And His Fear Of Heights For New Year's Eve Ball Drop Scene

12 December 2011 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actor Hector Elizondo had to hide his horror when he found himself on top of the famous New York glitter ball used to count down the New Year in his latest film.

The star reteamed with his Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall for new film New Year's Eve and was terrified when the filmmaker made him challenge his fear of heights for a scene in the star-studded project.

He tells WENN, "With Garry there's usually some inducement or perk with doing certain jobs. This time it was, 'You don't have to go to New York and be on the ball. We're doing it on green screen at Warner Brothers.' I said, 'That's good because it's March and there are snowstorms.'

"Then the phone call came: 'Guess what, we're going to New York and you're gonna be on the ball in March.'

"I'm a fellow who gets dizzy licking an airmail stamp, so being on top of the ball 40 storeys above ground at 2.30 in the morning when it's below zero with the windchill factor and having to look relaxed, while not being able to go to the bathroom for four hours was a big challenge! That was an experience." »

New Year's Eve Review

11 December 2011 3:24 PM, PST | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Directed by Gary Marshall, the man behind Pretty Woman and Valentines Day, and starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood, New Year's Eve is exactly what you'd expect it to be. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, really depends on you. Based on the same formula that proved a hit with Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve tells the story of a group of New Yorkers dealing with the pressures of the titular day. Like Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve's main draw is it cast, with Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Zac Effron, Hilary Swank and Jessica Biel all involved. However, with a cast that most directors would kill for, we still see the usual workaholic mother, the self centred bachelor and another host of romcom archetypes. Cliches aren't always a bad thing, it's just a shame with a cast this varied and talented, that director Marshal »

New Year’S Eve (2011) – The Review

9 December 2011 7:59 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Seems that not that long ago holidays were almost the exclusive domain of horror flicks ( thanks in no small part to John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween ). This extended to other calendar dates like certain Fridays and even birthdays. With the release last year of Valentine’S Day the “rom-com” has decided to horn in on the cineplex action thanks to TV sitcom master ( his trifecta being ” Happy Days “, ” Laverne and Shirley ” and ” Mork and Mindy ” ) turned movie comic kingpin ( Pretty Woman ) Gary Marshall. Now Mr. M has decided to take on another big ( usually romantic ) holiday with New Year’S Eve and once again he’s assembled another gang of big stars ( with two returnees from last year ). We’ve haven’t opened our presents under the tree yet ( some of us haven’t even begun shopping ), so is this early cinema offering a gift that we’ll revisit again and again? »

Dear Mr. Garry Marshall: I know you've had lots of success in the past (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries). Some of your films are among the most celebrated, romantic comedies in recent film history, but with your latest movie, New Year's Eve, which depicts a dozen stories in New York City all leading up midnight on December 31st, it seems like there might be some wheel spinning going on. So, in honor of the film's premise and with the actual New Years on the very near horizon, please take the time to read over this resolution list, if not for the new year coming up, then for your next film at least. Let's begin. 1. Roberts Raves About Adele In Magazine Comment Piece

9 December 2011 12:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Julia Roberts has paid tribute to soul singer Adele in a comment piece article featured in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

The Pretty Woman star admits she had never heard of the British star until a hairdresser friend urged the actress to check out her new album and upon hearing it, Roberts admits she became an immediate fan.

The Oscar winner says, "I thought, 'How have I lived my whole life without knowing what she sounds like singing?' It's that kind of voice.

"Someone Like You is probably everyone's favourite (song), but I just love it. And I love the video - she looks so gorgeous, rocking her eyeliner. Adele's music is so personal that you get invested in her life."

The actress admits she is also concerned about Adele's vocal problems, which prompted the singer to scrap a U.S. tour this year and undergo surgery on her throat last month.

She adds, "When Adele had her health scare, I had random people saying to me, 'Oh my God, did you hear about Adele...?' It really made me think, 'We all have a real investment here'.

"We feel like Adele's in our book club or she lives in our neighbourhood - and that's a gift, to make people feel that way."

The new issue of the publication also features a tribute to actress Viola Davis, written by her Doubt co-star Meryl Streep, a piece on Brad Pitt by his The Fight Club director David Fincher and articles glowing about Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone by Steve Carell and Woody Harrelson, respectively. »

How many stars does it take to make a successful romantic comedy? Whatever the right answer may be, the reviews for "New Year's Eve" indicate that two dozen is probably too many.

The follow-up to last year's successful "Valentine's Day," the star-packed rom-com modeled on "Love Actually," has earned some of the worst reviews of the year, with critics complaining of over-jammed story lines and convenient storytelling.

Check out our roundup of the reviews to help you decide whether to check out "New Year's Eve" this weekend.

New Year's Eve – review

Holiday films don't get much more dispiriting than this lame, star-stuffed rom-com set on the last day of the year

Like alcoholics, critics can reach rock bottom. Some moment of horror or revulsion or wretchedness, some terrible epiphany of disgust, whose only saving grace is a later glimmer of hope that things can only improve after that. I had that moment last year, staggering out of the sucrose all-star rom-com Valentine's Day by Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall, after which my colleagues had to stage a desperate intervention on the pavement outside the cinema, snatching the razor away from my throat. But, sadly, things can always get worse, and now Marshall has put together another of his sinister feelgood-event ensemblers, this time based around New Year's Eve in New York.

Structured weirdly like an old-fashioned disaster movie, this also features an all-star cast phoning in dead-eyed performances as their characters' »

Barbara Orbison, Roy Orbison's widow, dead at 60

7 December 2011 11:56 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Barbara Orbison, the widow of rock great Roy Orbison, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 6) from pancreatic cancer. She was just 60 years old.

In a strange bit of irony, Barbara Orbison's death comes 23 years to the day that her husband died. The "Oh, Pretty Woman" singer passed away in 1988 just as he was beginning a musical comeback. He was only 52 when he died of a heart attack.

Orbison had been fighting her condition for a while and had been hospitalized since May.

Since her husband's passing, Barbara remained active in the music industry. Her music publishing company recently earned Bmi's 2010 Song of the Year for Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me".

Barbara Orbison is survived by sons Wesley Orbison, 46, Roy Kelton Orbison, Jr., 41 and Alexander Orbison, 36.
