Masters of Sex Recap: Since When?

21 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In a way, Masters of Sex is always about Bill and Virginia lying to one other — about their feelings, about their needs, about the nature of their work together and their relationship. But we've never seen Gini lie to Bill quite as seamlessly as she does from a Las Vegas hotel bed with Dan Logan, faking the flu and letting Bill "talk her into" staying home from work for a few days. "It's important," she explains to Dan, "for Bill to think that it was his idea." She's really quite good at it.But Gini's perfectly healthy, and Dan's arranged a Pretty Woman–style menu of morning activities for her: a Swedish massage, personal shopping appointment, and trip to the hotel's hair salon. She immediately cancels all three, settles in at a slot machine instead, and is immediately intrigued by the way people's actions when they win a jackpot mirror »

28 August 2015 5:45 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Jack Whitehall has been cast in a Hollywood movie alongside A-listers Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.

Stand-up comedian Whitehall - of Bad Education, A League Of Their Own and Backchat with Jack Whitehall and His Dad fame - will play a young British father in Atlanta.

Called Mother's Day, the film is the third in the rom-com-ensemble, set-all-on-one-day series from director Garry Marshall, following on from Valentine's Day (2010) and New Year's Eve (2011).

Roberts and Marshall previously worked together on 1990's hit Pretty Woman and 1999's Runaway Bride, though there is no sign of Richard Gere joining this movie just yet.

Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis, meanwhile, have formally signed up to the project, which centres on the lives of several mothers' dramas on the titular holiday.

The film has no official release date yet, but there's a decent chance it might be March 6, 2016 - Mother's Day next year - in the UK. »

Watch: Bill Maher Blows Up Donald Trump in Cheesy 1991 Movie

5 August 2015 8:13 AM, PDT | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

Long before he was host of HBO's Real Time, Bill Maher was just another comedian trying to make it big in show business. This required that he have his fair share of bad movie roles (and bad '80s hair). Case in point: Pizza Man. Written by the guy behind Pretty Woman, the movie starred Maher as Elmo Bunn, a pizza delivery man notorious for never having been stiffed on an order. »

From France With Love: Gender And Identity In French Romantic Comedy

By Mary Harrod (I. B. Tauris, £62/ $99)264 pages. Hardback. Isbn: 9781784533588

Review by Diane Rodgers

French romantic comedy has been enjoying something of a popularity boom, beginning slowly in the 1990s and showing no sign of waning two decades later.  The 'comédie romantique' (still a relatively new term in the French language) now firmly standardised as a popular film genre in France. The rom-com genre has outperformed all others financially, responsible for around 50% of domestic box office takings and the lion's share of French film production. So why, Mary Harrod poses, has the area been so badly neglected by scholarly research?

This book is not, perhaps, for those with a casual or passing interest in the genre; some degree of academic knowledge and awareness of related literature is assumed here. However, throughout the study, Harrod makes a strong case for academic »

Julia Roberts 'never gives direction' to stylists

17 July 2015 4:55 AM, PDT | National Ledger | See recent National Ledger news »

Julia Roberts ''never gives direction'' to her hairstylist and makeup artist. Genevieve Herr has been doing the 47-year-old actress' red carpet make-up for over a dozen years, and has revealed Julia has absolutely no input when it comes to her hair and face, allowing the ''experts'' to do their work. The make-up artist said: ''Julia never gives directions. She says, 'You're the experts,' and she sits there and is 100 percent all ours.'' Genevieve - who has also worked on actress Katie Holmes - revealed Julia is ''always laughing'', and, with this in mind, opted for ''fun'' pink lips when it came to the Lancome ambassador celebrating the beauty brand's 80th birthday in Paris. She said: ''Julia is always laughing, so I try to keep her makeup fun because that fits her personality.'' For the special day, Genevieve also used a weightless foundation, due to the 'Pretty Woman' actress being ''older'', »

8 Inherently Annoying Movies That Everyone You Know Seems To Love

Paramount Pictures

There are a special collection of films that the masses tend to endlessly gravitate around; films that the collective human race are somehow pre-programmed to re-watch over and over again on a regular basis, for no reason other than: “This… again!”

You know the films. Romantic comedies slapped with slightly suggestive two-word titles like Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman. Lengthy, hopeful dramas with life-affirming messages such as The Shawshank Redemption. Mainstream flicks with just a hint of edginess, like Fight Club. And, of course… anything that Christopher Nolan turns out.

Not that there’s anything nothing wrong with these particular movies; they’re popular for a reason, and people go back to them time and time again because they offer up a sense of tried and tested goodness – they’re comforting, like your favourite hot meal.

But whereas a lot of very popular motion pictures deserve their good reputations, »

'Kids': The Oral History of the Most Controversial Film of the Nineties

It was the summer of 1995. Bill Clinton was president, Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York, and Oj Simpson was on trial. That summer’s youth-oriented movies included Pixar's first movie Toy Story, the Disney musical Pocahontas — and Kids, in which wayward, stoned teens fuck each other senseless and head-stomp random strangers.

It might be hard to remember just how notorious Larry Clark's indie-skater odysey was. The movie grossed a modest $7 million at the box office that summer — a wild success when you account for the fact that it »

Karlovy Vary Artistic Head Karel Och Weighs in on Fest’s Anniversary Edition

As the Karlovy Vary Film Festival celebrates its 50th edition, artistic director Karel Och is wrapping his fifth as head of the Czech Republic-based event (though he’s been involved in one capacity or another since 2001). Reflecting back on how Karlovy Vary has changed since he took charge, Och has reason to be proud of the fest’s jubilee year — and optimistic about those to come.

Last year, attendance was up 30%, thanks in part to the way two Czech holidays fell during the nine-day event, setting a daunting bar to beat this time around — and yet the festival managed, drawing an estimated 40,000 people to the streets of Karlovy Vary, kicking off with an open-air opening bash where everyone in town was invited to party in the streets outside the Thermal Hotel (though black-tie VIPs still managed to sequester themselves in the city’s picturesque Grand Hotel Pupp, where first-day festivities »

The Most Iconic Jewelry in the Movies

Precious jewels have provided fodder for drama practically since drama was invented, with precious stones and trinkets used as plot devices in plays written as far back as 100 B.C. As man-made substitutes such as rhinestones, moissanite, and cubic zirconium started making the market for seemingly-precious stones more, well, precious, so did the real thing become more dramatic to seek out on film. Here are a few of the most sought after, revered and iconic pieces of jewelry dramatized for our viewing pleasure.

Julia Roberts And Jennifer Aniston Celebrate Mother's Day

30 June 2015 5:51 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Now officially a sort of anthology franchise, Garry Marshall's ensemble holiday movies have just reached episode three. Mother's Day will be the follow-up to Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve, with Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis all in negotiations to head up what will undoubtedly be another large cast. Not to be confused with the Mother's Day in which Rebecca De Mornay killed a number of people, this one will, unsurprisingly, tell the intertwining stories of several mothers as the day approaches and they wait for their bunch of daffs. Or whatever. Marshall aside, the film has slightly different DNA to its predecessors. Anya Kochoff-Romano (Monster In Law) and Lily Hollander replace Katherine Fugate as the writers, and while the previous two films came out of New Line, that's not a done deal this time. Richard Gere Talks Movies, Karlovy Vary Honor

26 June 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Richard Gere has enjoyed — and is still enjoying — the sort of hugely successful, long, eclectic career that nearly every actor would kill for. Gere started gathering serious attention in Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” in 1978, but it was his role as the titular “American Gigolo” in Paul Schrader’s now-iconic 1980 film that vaulted him to Hollywood stardom. He went on to sweep Debra Winger off her feet in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” and saved Julia Roberts from a life of prostitution in “Pretty Woman” (reteaming later with Roberts on “Runaway Bride”). Gere tackled song and dance with “The Cotton Club” and “Chicago,” danced around the law as a corrupt cop in “Internal Affairs” and donned armor as Lancelot in “First Knight.” More recently, he’s walked on the seamier side of Wall Street (“Arbitrage”) and stayed over at “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”
