The Enduring Appeal of Julia Roberts: How the Pretty Woman Star Became the Queen of Hollywood and Has Ruled Ever Since

19 April 2017 12:45 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Pretty Woman made a star out of 22-year-old Julia Roberts in 1990, and she never stopped shining. She famously wasn't the studio's first (or even fourth) choice to play Vivian, the sweet and brainy gal from Georgia with a megawatt smile who ended up a prostitute in Hollywood after following a bad boyfriend to La La Land but ends up being rescued by Richard Gere's commitment-phobe corporate raider, in the now classic R-rated rom-com. But the first-time leading lady—a sweet, brainy gal from Georgia with a megawatt smile in real life too—made it work, and still manages to make that movie work 27 years later, despite its "just try and get away with that now" »

Julia Roberts Makes History With Her People's Most Beautiful Win

19 April 2017 9:45 AM, PDT | | See recent Popsugar news »

Julia Roberts isn't just a pretty woman, she's People's Most Beautiful Woman. On Wednesday, the 49-year-old actress made history by receiving the title for a fifth time. "I am very flattered," she told the magazine. "It will become embarrassing. Right now, let's just keep it with flattering." The first time she received the honor was in 1991, when she was just 23 years old, adding that she was just "adorable and naïve and so happy to be invited to the party." She would go on to appear on the cover in 2000, 2005, and 2010. And it certainly isn't lost on her that she is now way ahead of longtime friend George Clooney, who's been People's Sexiest Man Alive twice. "I'm going to mention that in my Christmas card to the Clooneys this year." While Pretty Woman definitely helped put her on the map, Julia didn't really understand the impact it would have on her career until much later. »

The original ending of Pretty Woman was seriously dark

Kirsten Howard Apr 18, 2017

Pretty Woman star Richard Gere has been chatting about the film's original, and much more bleak, ending. And, wow...

While not everyone is a fan of the 1990 rom-com classic Pretty Woman, you'd be hard-pressed to knock it off a list of uplifting flicks.

To be fair, plot-wise, there's not a lot to it. Julia Roberts' unlikely prostitute Vivian Ward is suddenly and unexpectedly swept up from her cash-in-hand world of sex work - which she insists she runs on her own terms - and into the extravagant life of client Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). He's a rich businessman with not a lot going on in the romance department and, inevitably, happily ever after ensues.

A Transformed Richard Gere Finds Indie Is The Way To Go In Two New Films

By my count it has been almost a decade since Richard Gere last toplined a conventional major studio film — 2008’s Nicholas Sparks romantic drama Nights In Rodanthe from Warner Bros. His last huge hit was 2002’s Oscar-winning musical Chicago, which brought him a Golden Globe but failed to put him in the Best Actor Oscar race, something that has unfairly eluded him his entire career. Some fans might consider this a big mistake! While Pretty Woman is one of the most famous films in Richard Gere's repertoire, he's not exactly catching reruns of the 1990 romantic comedy on Saturday afternoons.  As he admitted to Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday night, it's been 27 years since he last saw the film—yes, he last watched it when it first came out.    "I saw it with [Julia Roberts]—when we were in previews," he answered honestly.  While it may not be fresh in his memory, Garry Mashall's classic remains a highlight of Gere's fans. Richard Gere on the Desperate but Optimistic ‘Norman’ and ‘Pretty Woman’ Original Ending

It’s been 27 years since Richard Gere and Julia Roberts charmed their way through “Pretty Woman” and today Gere is seated in a room at the Beverly Wilshire, the very hotel where they shot the blockbuster movie. And according to Gere, that was the last time he set foot in the Los Angeles establishment. “It struck me I haven’t been here since then,” he notes.

Gere goes on to reflect on that film’s director, the late, great Garry Marshall, who passed away last July. “Garry was good to everybody,” he says. “I’ve known him 30 years and never saw him abuse anyone, be cross with anyone, or be less than a gentleman. It didn’t matter how powerful or weak someone was, no one was outside the realm of his concern.”

He goes on to talk about the memorial held for Marshall last November, on what would have »

Exclusive: Richard Gere Reflects on 'Pretty Woman' and 'An Officer and a Gentleman' All These Years Later

It's hard to believe how many years have passed since Richard Gere charmed audiences in hits like Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman, but the 67-year-old actor's clearly still got it.

Et's Lauren Zima caught up with the silver fox at the premiere of his new film, Norman, in Los Angeles on Wednesday, where he opened up about how he's managed to get better with age -- and said a lot of it has to do with diet.

"I haven't eaten meat really since I was 27. That was 40 years ago," Gere said. "It does help. It's kind of amazing. I feel like I have more energy."

Still, the actor (who is currently dating 34-year-old Alejandra Silva) says nothing compares to the shape he was in while filming 1982's An Officer and a Gentleman.

How the Murder of Starlet Rebecca Schaeffer by Her Stalker ‘Changed Hollywood’

Danna Schaeffer can vividly recall the moment she learned her daughter, up-and-coming actress Rebecca Schaeffer, had been murdered.

It was a July morning in 1989 in Portland, Oregon, and Dana, a writer and teacher, was working on a play. So when her phone started ringing at about 11:30 a.m., she let it go to her answering machine.

Then she heard the message an ABC executive had left for her, and she called back.

“I still remember how sunny my voice sounded when he picked up the phone,” Danna told Entertainment Weekly. “Then he said, and these words are inscribed in my brain, »

Film Review: ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’

26 March 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If you go with your family to see “Smurfs: The Lost Village” (and let’s be honest: most of today’s animated features are more than suitable for adults only, but anyone who would go to this movie without children is seriously starved for entertainment), you’ll get to experience the trailer for “The Emoji Movie,” an upcoming feature from the same studio, Sony Pictures Animation. The trailer is hosted by an emoji named Meh, voiced in the morose observational tones of comedian Steven Wright; in just 30 seconds, he makes not being overly enthusiastic about anything seem the apex of hilarity. I won’t prejudge the film, but it’s a stupendous trailer.

Then we get to the Smurfs movie, which has a hundred characters who are Smurfs, and not one of them is as funny, or wry, or distinctive as Meh. You might describe the Smurfs as blueberry Hobbits »

‘Pretty Woman’: Looking Back at Julia Roberts’ Star-Making Role

24 March 2017 10:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

On March 21, 1990, Touchstone Pictures previewed “Pretty Woman” at the Avco Westwood near UCLA, two days before its national launch. Variety columnist Army Archerd reported that laughter drowned out much of the dialogue and young Julia Roberts “is headed for heavy stardom.” In retrospect, that seems like a pretty safe prediction, but Roberts was not well known when she was cast in the film. (She had completed her role as Sally Fields’ daughter in “Steel Magnolias,” but the film hadn’t been released yet). Roberts was only cast in “Pretty Woman” after numerous other actresses had passed on the role, including Meg Ryan, Karen Allen, Molly Ringwald, Diane Lane and Michelle Pfeiffer.

And the project began with a much darker tone; in J.F. Lawton’s original screenplay, streetwalker Vivian (Roberts) agrees to give up cocaine for her week with banker Edward (Richard Gere), but at the end he dumps her back »

'Pretty Woman': THR's 1990 Review

On March 23, 1990, Julia Roberts shot to the A-list in the modern telling of Cinderella, Pretty Woman, with her performance nominated for a best actress Oscar at the 63rd Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:

Pretty Woman tackles the lighter side of prostitution, creating a romantic comedy out of a busy executive's need for submissive female company and conjuring the perfect lifetime companion out of a woman-for-hire.

In plot terms, this somewhat controversial premise resolves itself into a collection of smoothly written vignettes charting the transformation of a streetwalker from vulgarian to sophisticate and thus acceptable »
