Paula Wagner Grabs Film Rights to Mother of Hip-Hop’s Life Story

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Producer Paula Wagner has acquired the film rights to the life story of Sylvia Robinson, the founder of Sugar Hill Records, with an eye toward producing a biopic about the hip-hop pioneer.

Joey Robinson, Sylvia’s son, will executive produce, while music exec Robert Kraft is on board to co-produce. Grandmaster Melle Mel — of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, whose tune “The Message” was produced by Robinson and released by her label — will serve as consultant to Joey Robinson.

The film will chart Sylvia Robinson’s life and career, which stretches from her time as one half of the duo Mickey and Sylvia (best known for 1957 hit “Love Is Strange”) to her time as a producer-writer (The Moments’ “Love on a Two Way Street”), solo artist (“Pillow Talk”) and record label founder. Robinson and her husband, Joe, started R&B label All Platinum in the 1970s and then in 1979 launched Sugar Hill Records, »

This Pretty Woman star almost had two roles of a lifetime within three years of each other!

Julia Roberts revealed to the September 2014 issue of InStyle magazine that she was almost the leading lady in the 1993 classic Sleepless in Seattle. While chatting about her alleged lack of ambition, the Oscar winner disclosed, "I'd been offered Sleepless in Seattle but couldn't do it. [Meg Ryan] and Tom Hanks are just such a jewel of a fit in that. I guess what they did for that moment in time is sort of what Richard [Gere] and I were doing across town (in the 1990 film Pretty Woman), you know?"

So there is this list on the internet that apparently contains every role Oscar winner Jeff Bridges has turned down in his career. And if you were to believe everything you read on the internet (and why wouldn’t you, right?), then Bridges was beaten out by Richard Gere twice—for An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman—and that audiences could have been “talking to” Bridges instead of Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver. ‘Ninja Turtles': What Happened to the Actress Who Played the Original April O’Neil?

8 August 2014 7:37 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This weekend, Megan Fox plays April O’Neil in Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” but she’s not the first actress to portray the character. In 1990, Judith Hoag originated the role of the intrepid reporter who befriends the pizza-loving heroes, although she almost turned down the part. “When I first heard of it, I thought it was a horror film,” Hoag recalls on a recent telephone call with Variety. “‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ is such a strange name. I wasn’t into the comic books at all.”

Hoag, 22 at the time, was in the middle of shooting the Robin Williams comedy “Cadillac Man,” and her schedule prevented her from committing to “Ninja Turtles.” Then the producers were able to make it work, and Hoag had to fly from New York to Wilmington, North Carolina, on the weekends for production. “People would be wondering where I would racing off to on a Friday, »

The Story of Hollywood in Just 10 Filmsc

Over at The Telegraph, Robbie Collin has chosen to take on the impossible, he's set out to create a list of films that tells the story of Hollywood "in terms of how one picture or director led to the next." It's a daunting task that creates an interesting narrative and he prefaces his ten selections saying: ...none of the individual works is "great" or "important" enough to drown out the others. I've avoided films such as Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Singin' in the Rain, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia and The Godfather, not just because we already know they're great, but because their greatness might throw the story off-balance - although I wouldn't hesitate to describe any of the films that are on this list as a masterpiece. So how does his list shape outc Have a look: One Week (1920) - dir. Buster Keaton It Happened One Night (1934) - dir. »

Watch Tom Hanks's Forrest Gump audition and more pre-fame A-listers

Forrest Gump first arrived in cinemas two decades ago, cementing Tom Hanks as an A-list movie star, winning a host of Oscars and spawning iconic quotes such as: "Life is like a box of chocolates..." You never know what you're going to get when perusing YouTube, and today's discovery just happens to be Hanks's original filmed audition for Robert Zemeckis.

We get to see Hanks alongside co-stars Robin Wright and Haley Joel Osment, but curiously missing is the Southern drawl we've come to love from the character. In the audition he's more Hanksy than Gumpy, but the character's naive charm is still evident.

A True Maverick: Top 10 Films of James Garner (1928-2014)

Indeed it is sad news to acknowledge the passing of Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actor James Garner (1928-2014). The Hollywood icon Garner has endured a remarkable show business career during a five-plus decade stretch as he has entertained generations of TV and film audiences throughout the ages. Upon the death of this immensely likable leading man on both the small and big screen many are probably wondering about their mortality at this point. After all, you either grew up with James Garner as a peer or spent your childhood watching him in your living rooms on the boob tube or at the local movie theater.

Although the majority of folks associate Garner with television from his first western series Maverick in the 1950′s to his landmark role as ex-con Pi Jim Rockford in the 1970′s The Rockford Files (some teens and young adults may recall his brief stint as grandfather Jim »

After a couple falls in love in movies, we fall in love with them. What we love about these two goofballs is that they’re best buds in real life, with a chemistry that translates on screen. They’re both married with families now, but if they dated back in the day, we would’ve been beyond happy.

Your Top Three: Romantic Comedies Since 'When Harry Met Sally'

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. This week is the 25th anniversary of the release of When Harry Met Sally, and to commemorate the occasion, Vulture counted down the 25 best romantic comedies that have arrived in its wake. It's a pretty surprising list, including a number of fairly dramatic pictures that I wouldn't necessarily call rom-coms, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (though they make a good effort to toss it into the Screwball subgenre), Punch-Drunk Love and The Silver Linings Playbook. The folks at Vulture also left out a number of favorites, warranting a whole other post explaining the omission of 10 titles, including Love Actually, Pretty Woman and the Before Sunrise...

Fun fact: This week’s Mistresses is officially sponsored by the letters “O,” “M,” “F” and “G.” But don’t get it twisted: The letters in question should not be locked exclusively in the standard “Oh Em Eff Gee” formation.

“O,” for instance, also pertains to the “Big O” achieved by Karen and Jacob as they go from office mates to just plain mates (affectionately known as “popping open a tube of Pillsbury Croissant Rolls”).
