Another Typical One Man Against The System Type Movie Partially Salvaged By Juhi Chawla
'Pratibandh' introduces Chiranjeevi to Hindi cinema. He was otherwise known as 'superstar' of Telegu cinema even though he's a terrible actor. 'Pratibandh' is also the film that saved Juhi Chawla's career. After 'Qayamat se Qayamat Tak', the actress desperately needed a hit to salvage her career. she had even ended up doing B-grade roles in forgettable movies until 'Pratibandh' which was later followed by a string of successful films that solidified her as a star.
Now the premise isn't anything new but I still think this had potential to be a gripping political thriller. Had it been made 10 years later then things may have been different. As of now, the movie has a B-grade feel to it (which is typical of most Hindi films that were made in the 80s and 90s). Flat cinematography, poor sound effects and awful lighting are examples of its bad execution. The dialogues are terribly clichéd and the ending is so over the top that it ruins the entire movie. Make sure your remote control's fast forward button is working.
'Pratibandh' is good in parts. Most of Juhi Chawla's sequences are worth the watch just for her terrific performance. She is simply superb as Shanti, a toy seller who finds herself charged with murder. She is rescued by Siddhanth from being convicted. Chiranjeevi is good when he's restrained but laughably bad otherwise. Kulbushan Kharbanda is adequate as the villain but whoever the actor is that plays the chief bad guy, I really wanted to beat the crap out of him. Easily one of the worst actors in the world (I'm not exaggerating).
Ravi Raja Pinisetty's direction is quite terrible. With a better director and writer this could have been something. Still, it's not a complete waste as Juhi's performance saves it from being a total dud.
