Storyline

As do most of the various KAMEN (MASKED) RIDER television series, RIDER ZO concerns itself with a human being who is transformed into a cyborg hero and subsequently challenges a ruthless and powerful menace (frequently an alien organization using a series of bizarre creatures to enforce their will) which rises to threaten the Earth. The transition into a Rider is frequently the result of the evil entities' attempts at creating an unbeatable warrior, though in some of the previous projects, some riders have acted to create other Riders, and at least one individual deliberately became a Rider in order to exact revenge. In this case, the selected human is researcher Asou Masaru. Slightly unbalanced scientist Dr. Mochizuki is experimenting on the creation of a mysterious and vaguely threatening organism. Along the way, he pauses to create a human/locust cyborg. Alarmed at his new form, ZO retreats to a nearby forest and hides away. In the meantime, Dr. Mochizuki has finished his work and ... Trivia

When first being shot, the cut ran nearly 90 minutes. To make sure it didn't run too long for kids to enjoy, several minutes of footage were cut out including: Alternate shots in the first fight between ZO and Doras; Asao visits Professor Mochizuki's lab, which then triggers the flashback to the experiment; The Doras sphere chasing Hiroshi through a car lot and then smashing into a car window; ZO transforming back into Asao after the fight with the Spider Woman and Bat Man in front of Hiroshi's grandfather; Asao coming across a building that Doras has demolished; Various stunts in the fight between Asao and the Bat Man; Hiroshi's sister trying to stop Hiroshi running from Asao; Various shots of the study room. Go, ZO!
8 May 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

After the failure of Shin Kamen Rider in 1992, Toei Co. Ltd. decided to return back to the famous hero's roots with their next Kamen Rider film, Kamen Rider ZO. The movie follows the traditional formula of previous Kamen Riders well with an added twist: ZO has to play a T-100 from Terminator 2 type of role.

Cons: The movie is a tad short and tends to rush itself, as with all Toei movies during this time. The claymation fight sequence is poor. Pointless J-Pop song in the middle of the film.

Pros: Well-staged live-action fight sequences. Catchy music. A nice and compact plot. Acting is pretty good. Great costume design (although they look a bit similar to the live action US Guyver film, save for ZO)

It's a film worth seeing, in my honest opinion. Fans will dig this and this is probably one of the best movies to watch to get a guy or girl into Kamen Rider.
