Dame Judi Dench will be the star of a British school's Christmas play this year after agreeing to voice one of the characters.
Pupils at the Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire, England wrote to the Shakespeare In Love actress asking her to appear in their production, and they were stunned when Dench replied.
She agreed to record lines for the role of the giant in their production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods - and the students are delighted with their new co-star.
Andrew Beales, the school's foundation director, says, "(The children are) really, really thrilled. They weren't really expecting to get her to agree to do it. It will be very inspiring for the kids to step on stage with Judi's voice behind them."
The play runs from 1 December until 3 December at the school's Richard Whiteley Theatre, which has boasted Dench as a patron since 2007. »

Chicago – Vincent D’Onofrio has had a career that is rich and diverse. He has worked with directors as distinct as Stanley Kubrick (”Full Metal Jacket”) and Tim Burton (”Ed Wood”), and has starred in the legendary TV franchise “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” He presents his directorial debut, “Don’t Go in the Woods,” on November 12th in Chicago at the “Tribeca Film Festival on the Road.”
Vincent D’Onofrio began his career in the early 1980s, and quickly built an impressive resume from there. He played opposite Julia Roberts in “Dying Young” (1991), had character parts in “JFK” (1991) and “The Player” (1992), and famously played Orson Welles in “Ed Wood” (1994). He practically stole the showy film, “Men in Black” (1997) as Edgar, and portrayed Abbie Hoffman in “Steal This Movie” (2000). From 2001-2011, he also made waves on television, memorably taking on the persona of Detective Robert Goren in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent. »

The 'Love and Other Drugs' actress has made no secret of her desire to have a cameo role in the musical drama series and creator Ryan Murphy has admitted he is "curious" to see what she would like to do on the programme.
He told MTV News: "I'm meeting with Anne in the next couple weeks. We're not going to do guest stars at all the first half of the season, but I would love to work with her and she supposedly has the whole thing mapped out. I'm curious as to what she wants to do. I love her. I think she's great."
Anne has previously spoken of her desire to appear in 'Glee', revealing she even has specific song ideas in mind for her character, which she would like to be the lesbian aunt of gay student Kurt Hummel - who is played by Chris Colfer. »

Actresses must love Stephen Sondheim. While the composer/lyricist,who basically defined American musical theater in an era of Webbers and Schonbergs, has certainly crafted soaring, complex ballads for his male protagonists — “Being Alive” from Company and “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park with George spring to mind — it is usually his women who get the showstoppers.
And while he has created some memorable ingenues in his time, the real musical zingers are usually given to what would appear to be Sondheim’s favorite character type: an embittered and acid-tongued yet oddly sexy middle-aged vamp. Usually the character is a supporting player, such as A Little Night Music’s Charlotte or the Witch from Into the Woods. But with Follies, now in previews at the Marquis Theater in New York, it is these women who own the show and get the final bow.

Patton Oswalt is one of my favorite comedians working today and his star in Hollywood is slowly on the rise. After a searing performance in 2009's Big Fan, he's had recurring supporting roles on Caprica and United States of Tara. He'll be seen back in theaters this December alongside Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson in Jason Reitman's Young Adult as well as the less-prestigious but probably-funnier A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. Oh, and his new comedy album, Finest Hour, hits stores on September 20th. Now Oswalt has a starring role opposite the charismatic Johnny Knoxville for an untitled comedy for writer-director Todd Rohal (The Catechism Cataclysm). The press release describes the plot as "an outlandish yet poignant comedy about a pair of battling brothers who attempt to honor their ailing father by taking a troop of boys on a last ditch camping trip that goes wildly wrong." In the New Group and Tectonic Theater Project’s Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ One Arm, Claybourne Elder plays Ollie, a chiseled and charming young Navy boxer, and he’s a total knockout in the role.
The 6-foot-1 out actor from Springville, Utah, pulls no punches in depicting how Ollie loses his right arm in an auto accident and then turns to a life of prostitution and prison. Based on Williams’ 1940s short story and 1967 unproduced screenplay, One Arm has been lovingly adapted into an 85-minute one-act and championed by another theatrical heavyweight: Moisés Kaufman.

Vincent D'Onofrio talks Kill the Irishman, his rapport with the remarkable cast, his upcoming directorial debut, Law & Order: Criminal Intent's final season, and more.
Vincent D'Onofrio has always been an actor I have admired for the diversity of roles he picks, and how he often disappears within his characters. His breakthrough year was 1987 where he appeared as the memorable Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket and in a much different but equally memorable turn as "Thor" in Adventures In Babysitting. He hasn't stopped working since, with an impressive filmography ranging from obscure indie's like the fantastic film The Salton Sea, sci-fi blockbusters like Men In Black and comedies like The Break-Up. Not only that, but he continued to rack up film credits even while starring on the hit NBC/USA Network drama Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Vincent D'Onofrio's latest movie is Kill the Irishman, which tells the fantastic true »

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, the new stop-motion, 3D, animated film produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation. The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.
Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to »

Q: Why is Eric on Gossip Girl still an on-screen-virgin (no sex, no kiss, no tenderness) when Teddy on 90210 is able to have nice French kiss and other nice stuff with Ian? It is because of the actor? The producer? Because they never "need it" in the storyline? Ugly Betty did it, Glee, Desperate Housewives. So why not Eric on Gossip Girl? A: I’d argue that it’s a combination of factors, staring with the age of the character, who was 15 when the series started, »

Theatre impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom Of The Opera sequel was completely shut out of London's prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards on Sunday, losing out in all seven of the categories it was nominated for.
Love Never Dies looked set to dominate the prizegiving after landing the most nods, but it was overlooked in every category and beaten to the Best New Musical trophy by the stage adaptation of Legally Blonde.
The star of the West End show, Sheridan Smith, danced away with Best Musical Actress for her portrayal of sorority queen Elle Woods - the role played by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 comedy - while her co-star Jill Halfpenny took Best Supporting Role in a Musical.
A production of Terence Rattigan satire After the Dance took home the most prizes with a tally of four, including Best Revival and acting nods for Nancy Carroll and supporting actor Adrian Scarborough.
Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods was named Best Musical Revival, while Queen musical We Will Rock You landed the BBC Radio 2 audience award.
Other winners included David Thaxton (Best Actor in a Musical for Passion) and Howard Davies (Best Director for The White Guard), and race relations show Clybourne Park claimed Best New Play.

Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, is showing some brand new thrillers directed by women that you will Not have seen playing anywhere else.
High on my list of stuff to see at Female Eye is Stacie Ponder's Ludlow, which stars Viscera founder Shannon Lark, and which I watched being edited. It's screening on March 18th and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.
Check out the other movies, some of which are making their world premieres. I'm suprised that they shied away from using the word "horror" to describe some of these movies; drama and thriller and suspense seem to be far less offensive terms to the mainstream movie-going public. Thank God we're not the mainstream movie-going public, eh?
Schedule you need to know!!!!:
Friday March 18th
9:00Pm – 10:30Pm

Last year, tunesmith Stephen Sondheim was the toast of Broadway with a theater named in his honor and a musical revue to mark his 80th birthday. This year, it is the turn of the Olivier Awards to fete him. At the March 13 ceremony, he will become the 24th recipient of the Special Award. He joins an illustrious list of previous recipients including four knights (John Gielgud, Peter Hall, Ralph Richardson, Ian McKellen); two dames (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith); and the first theatrical lord -- Laurence Olivier -- for whom these kudos are named. As part of the festivities at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, a musical tribute will be led by Adrian Lester, who won an Olivier Award for his performance in Stephen Sondheim’s "Company" in 1995. At this year's awards, last summer’s staging of Sondheim's "Into The Woods" at the Regent’s Park Open Air theatre contends with two bids. »

Robert here, with my series Distant Relatives, where we look at two films, (one classic, one modern) related through theme and ask what their similarities/differences can tell us about the evolution of cinema. Please note that hereafter be Spoilers Ahead.
Three characters in search of a killer
If there’s one notable difference between the original 1969 True Grit and the Coens’ version, it’s the sense of nihilism and meaninglessness in the world the Coens create. Of course the Coens have long been the kings of nihilistic worlds, and it says something that True Grit provides one of their most meaning filled realities. Still when all is done, in the Coen version, we’re left wondering what it was all worth. The John Wayne version, which suffers in no small part from being surrounded by a sea of bleak late 60’s cinematic masterpieces, feels more like a tale of good guys an bad guys. »

Go to an award show, land an Academy Award nominated guest star. Last night, not only did Glee pick up multiple Golden Globes but it also scored Anne Hathaway as Kurt Hummel’s lesbian aunt.
Series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the news to E! after the show won its second consecutive best comedy trophy. He said she pitched the guest starring role she created to them after they ran into each other and “we said, ‘Really?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ So we’re going to do that. We love her.” Earlier in the evening, Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter exactly what role Anne had envisioned:
She wants to play Chris Colfer’s lesbian aunt. She presented the whole episode. She came up with the songs.
Ok, this is the best Glee development since Brittany praised Naya’s “sweet lady kisses.” That chance meeting between Murphy and Hathaway happened when she »
