Hawaii Five-0 Review: Out of The Pan, Into the Fryer

13 December 2011 1:29 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

"Alaheo Pau'ole:" Gone Forever.

Was this entire Hawaii Five-0 episode pieced together from spare parts of better episodes? There were so many disjointed pieces that I nearly got lost along the way. Given the non-sequitur nature of the hour, I’m just going to break down the main points.

Lori and Danny Handcuffed: Does anyone have any idea what point there was to this storyline? Furthermore, why did Steve feel the need to drop they key off the balcony? It all felt totally out of place.

We have not seen any indication that Lori and Danny would be romantically linked. What the heck is the “Jersey Slip” and why do you need to be handcuffed to another person for it to work? Finally, what type of horrible police officer is Danny that his handcuff key is not on a key ring of any sort... and he only has one in his possession? »

Stephen King's Rose Madder to get film Adaptation

8 November 2011 5:27 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Almost every Stephen King novel that has ever been written has gotten or will eventually get a feature film or TV adaptation. The guys stories are just so awesome why wouldn't anyone want to develop them into something we can watch and enjoy. It's great to see that King's 1995 book Rose Madder is finally going to get it's shot. This story has had a hell of a time trying to get to the big screen because of how odd the story is, but Palomar Pictures has taken it upon themselves to take on the challenge as part of a three-film deal with Grosvenor Park.

Rose Madder is a combination of several different elements, it's domestic saga, part fairytale and part Greek myth. The story involves a woman trying to escape from her abusively violent husband. She ends up getting a painting that she can go inside. Once she enters the »

New Release: Cop Land Collector’s Series Blu-ray

31 October 2011 1:21 PM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Release Date: Nov. 1, 2011

Price: Blu-ray $14.99

Studio: Lionsgate

The 1997 crime film Cop Land features perhaps Sylvester Stallone’s (The Expendables) best performance.

Written and directed by James Mangold (Knight and Day), the drama movie stars Stallone as Freddy Heflin, the sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that’s home to a crop of New York City policemen. Injured in an accident years earlier, Freddy looks up to the NYPD cops, something he has always aspired to be, but when he sees a young cop (Michael Rapaport, The 6th Day) who’s supposedly dead alive and kicking, he begins to realize that the cops living in his town might not be so perfect. When Internal Affairs (Robert De Niro, Taxi Driver) asks for Freddy’s help, he’s torn between turning against the cops he admires and being the kind of policeman he has always tried to be.

Released in 1997, Cop Land has a great cast. »

Visualizing Emotion: John Seale talks about Peter Weir

30 October 2011 3:22 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Trevor Hogg chats to Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Seale about his collaborations with filmmaker Peter Weir...

While directing episodes for Luke’s Kingdom (ABC, 1976), a miniseries chronicling the colonial hardships in the Australian Outback, filmmaker Peter Weir worked with a camera operator whom he decided to recruit for his next feature film. The creative partnership would span seven pictures and would result in John Seale evolving into an internationally acclaimed cinematographer.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), a turn of the twentieth century tale about a group of schoolgirls who vanish while exploring a mysterious rock formation, features Seale cleverly indicating the passage of time by rotating the camera 180 degrees as the girls make their way up a hill. What proved to be difficult was the handling of the enormous Pvsr sound cameras for the interior school scenes. “One was the tilt and crane down shot of the girls coming down the stairs, »

Hawaii Five-0 Welcomes Back Kono

Hawaii Five-0 Welcomes Back Kono

University of Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Brian Scartelli is robbed and beaten to death after a match. Five-0′s investigation of Scartelli’s murder runs across Kono’s work for corrupt ex-cop Frank Delano (BIlly Baldwin).

For the most part, I’ve enjoyed this season’s increased emphasis on discernible procedure, but “Ma’ema’e” struck me as too procedural in the negative sense, a by-the-numbers conclusion to the season-long arc wherein Kono has been under Internal Affairs investigation and hanging around with a ring of corrupt cops. From the beginning of the arc, many viewers guessed that Kono was working undercover for Capt. Fryer (Tom Sizemore) to take down Fryer’s ex-hpd partner, Frank Delano (Billy Baldwin). The arc and its conclusion never did much of anything to make viewers doubt that guess.

I liked the way Five-0′s investigation of Scartelli’s »

Blue Bloods Review: "Friendly Fire"

1 October 2011 12:05 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

After last week's lackluster premiere, I was happy to see Blue Bloods getting back to normal. "Friendly Fire" put Danny right in the thick of an incident that placed his badge on the line.

Actually, it wasn't so much the shooting itself but the way Danny handled it that put him in jeopardy. Doing the stakeout on his own was just stupid. He was already in trouble, why risk making things worse? Especially when Jackie or another officer would have surely done the job for him. It was foolishness on Danny's part.

Danny's a good cop but he frequently lets his ego and his emotions rule his actions and that's reckless.

I loved the opening where Linda and Danny were sniping at one another. You have days like that, even in the best of marriages. Days when the stupid stuff makes you crazy.

But that didn't stop her from being »

Episode Recap: Hawaii Five-0 - 2.02: "Ua Lawe Wale"

27 September 2011 12:58 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Second episode into the season and the angsty high of the premier has worn off. It's back to work, as usual, but with a change or two. Only time will tell if these changes help or hurt the show. There's a paddleboard race from Molokai to O'ahu taking place, and 15 yr old Jen Hassley (Hayley Chase) is in the lead. She wins, unsurprisingly, gets hugs and kisses from the parentals, then disappears. Mom sees her being spirited away from the grounds in a red car. Meanwhile, downtown, Steve (Alex O'loughlin) has been called to the principal's office. Again. He bides his time reading "Women's Day" magazine – perhaps Smooth Dog is taking notes – when he realizes this meeting won't be just him and the new Gov. Leggy and lovely Homeland Security agent Lori Weston (Lauren German) catches his eye, literally (thanks for that anvil, show) and they make googoo eyes at »

Officer Lori Weston Helps Hawaii Five-0 Shape Up

Officer Lori Weston Helps Hawaii Five-0 Shape Up

After a paddleboard competition, young champion Jen Hassley (Hayley Chase) is kidnapped. McGarrett must work the case with Officer Lori Weston (Lauren German), newly added to the Five-0 task force by Governor Denning (Richard T. Jones). Meanwhile, the still-suspended Kono meets the head of Hpd Internal Affairs (Tom Sizemore).

In last week’s review, I mentioned my hope that Gov. Denning’s crackdown on Five-0 would lead to tighter plotting. This week’s episode, “Ua Lawe Wale,” was noticeably tighter. For one thing, Officer Weston is the first member of Five-0 whose police skill set is spelled out from the beginning. Having served six years with Homeland Security and begun her career with the FBI, her background was just right to assist with the kidnapping case, and she applied her training realistically.

In addition to more discernible procedure, this episode’s plot »

Hawaii Five-o Review: "Ua Lawe Wale"

27 September 2011 1:59 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Ua Lawe Wale: Taken without right.

The second offering of the season helped us fall back into the familiar rhythm with the Five-o, as the Steve and the team investigated a girl who was "Ua Lawe Wale."

What happened to Lt. Commander Joe White? There was no mention of Terry O'Quinn character that appeared last week to help Steve get his unit back together, despite the heavy advertising push by CBS.

In other news, who expected to hate Detective Lori Weston as the Governor’s watch dog? Now, raise your hand if you really liked her by the end of the episode? Okay, good. Me too.

I’m not going to jinx her and say she should be a full-time member, but I will say she brings a very nice element to the team with her background.  It doesn’t hurt for Five-o to tap into some of the other »
