Finney superb in TV movie about journalistic responsibility, 26 June 2000

What we have here is an updated version of the film classic FIVE STAR FINAL, only now it's tv journalism that's on the block. Finney gives a masterful performance as a star TV anchorman (read Dan Rather) whose media invasion of a real estate scam propels the suicide of the suspected perpetrator. Only after he's dead, it seems more and more that he was an innocent dupe and that journalism and Finney's hard-hitting Cromwell in particular are responsible for the death. This is fast-paced, very noisy, and quite well done. The story is not new nor is the approach, but it is certainly good drama and well acted. Marsha Mason appears in seven short scenes as Cromwell's neglected wife - only one scene as written allows her to shine as she holds a mirror up to her work-obsessed husband. Worth seeking out.
