Storyline

Bud is a strange loner who works in a liquor store by day and is addicted to betting on the horses at night. He lives in a low-rent building in an even lower-rent section of town, and one day a couple, who appear to be brother and sister, move into Bud's building. Soon the sister begins to try to seduce Bud, but not for the reasons one would expect, as she and her "brother" aren't what they appear to be--but neither is Bud. Written by frankfob2@yahoo.com

Michael Harris and Sammi Davis prey upon Brad Dourif
18 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Horseplayer" (1990) is a neo-noir, a Kurt Voss movie. I like his movies, basically. This one features novelty, even strangeness, of character and story and four good performances.

Dourif likes being let alone. He once was in jail for a violent crime. Now he works in Vic Tayback's liquor store in the cooler where he stocks the shelves with beer. When not working, he sits there all bundled up. He likes this job.

Below his apartment live artist Michael Harris and his girl, Sammi Davis. They make out as if they're brother and sister so that Davis can seduce guys who become subjects of Harris's paintings. They prey on Dourif, with unexpected results.

Dourif is the horseplayer and the main character. The pleasures of this movie are in the scenes that seem to be ordinary but are invested with a feeling of much more going on below the surface. IMDb voters see merit in this film (7.4) and it's there.
