Discombobulated romance
lor_17 November 2023
There's no screenplay credit listed for Hal Freeman's "Hidden Desire", a romance feature aimed at couples that features way too many abrupt and unconvincing plot twists. As often is the case, a few rewrites might have made it work.

Raven Richards, billed confusingly as just "Raven" (a stage name assigned to a bigger star at the time, who easily manipulates Randy West. He finds her unconscious in the surf while jogging and quickly gets into trouble. Taking her home, they both shower and it's obvious she has some nefarious plan for him. Unfortunately, not much makes sense once Raven goes to work, as six sex scenes unspool, almost randomly.

Essentially, Randy gets caught with his pants down by his lovely fiancee Tanya DeVries. In a cryptic bondage scene, Raven ties Randy up and blindfolds him with her fishnet stockings, so that Heather Torrance can make love to him, all set up by Raven with the aid of Randy's friend Wayne Summers. Other than the obvious "get him into trouble" premise, the scene makes no sense. Similarly, Randy's partner from work Scott Irish makes love to Randy's next-door neighbor Carol Cummings while doing pool cleaning for Randy -makes no sense.

Odd casting has DeVries, credited under a stage name "Lola" here, ending up having sex out of the blue with a fellow Dutch actor Mark De Bruin. Her line readings in English are atrocious. Mark and Tanya co-starred again for director Freeman in "Double Jeopardy".

Romantic music is supposed to signal the mood here, but it would have worked better as a true Femme Fatale crime thriller about Richards had a proper screenwriter been hired.
