Mark Wahlberg clashed with director Martin Scorsese during the filming of 2006's The Departed. The actor revealed that he got hair extensions for Invincible, his next movie, and he refused to remove them after his filming as Dignam went longer than expected. The Departed was worth the behind-the-scenes friction in the end, as it was a major critical and commercial success.
The Departed star Mark Wahlberg addresses the behind-the-scenes clashes that occurred with Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio leads The Departed's cast as Billy, an undercover cop who works to identify a mole in the Boston police department. The film, which took home four Oscars, features a stacked cast, with Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin also starring. Wahlberg played Dignam in the film, a hot-headed Sergeant, and he notoriously had some friction with Scorsese during filming.

"All in the Family" might've been Norman Lear's finest half-hour as a sitcom producer, but I'm not sure he ever put a funnier show on the airwaves than "The Jeffersons." For 11 seasons, Sherman Hemsley's dry-cleaning magnate George Jefferson and Isabel Sanford's good-hearted Louise "Weezy" Jefferson led a stellar cast that delivered edgy-for-network-television laughs revolving around race, class, gender, and whatever happened to be grinding the hot-headed George's gears that particular week. It was the African-American answer to "All in the Family" (on which the characters of George and Weezy originated), and might actually be more shocking today for its fearless deployment of the n-word (particularly early in the series' run).
And if you're making a list of the most memorable theme songs in television history, "The Jeffersons" better be in the top five. Anyone who grew up watching the show in prime time or via syndication should...

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.

Martin Scorsese has been making films since the ‘60s and debuted with Who’s That Knocking On My Door and struggled for a bit before finding his breakthrough with the gangster film Mean Streets.

25 years ago, television changed forever. It was at the start of 1999 that HBO aired the first episode of The Sopranos – the groundbreaking gangster drama that took the cinematic tropes of The Godfather and Goodfellas and turned them longform. With its then-contemporary depiction of a crime family – both the underworld operation run by James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano, and the domestic Soprano household – facing up to the realities of 21st Century life and a tidal shift in mobster generations, it was both a deconstruction of and gripping addition to the gangster canon. In the likes of Tony, and Lorraine Bracco’s therapist Dr. Melfi, and Steven Van Zandt’s hard-headed Silvio Dante, and Edie Falco’s long-suffering wife Carmela Soprano, it introduced some of the greatest characters to ever grace the small screen.

Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Known for her roles in Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney recently opened up during an SXSW Q&a session about her dream director. No, he is not Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan; rather, she would prefer to collaborate with Martin Scorsese.
This may surprise some people considering Nolan’s standing as a visionary director, who recently won the Oscar for Oppenheimer. That being said, the two-time Emmy-nominated actress, 26, might have been drawn in by Scorsese’s storytelling and character development.
However, her admiration for Scorsese might not necessarily lead to any Academy Award wins. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, the Taxi Driver director has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions.

The Oscars 2024 were full of surprises and had all the nominees as well as non-nominees constantly at the edge of their seats. However, throughout all the people who were in utter excitement and awe of everyone who won, Martin Scorsese was not involved.

If anything, the filmmaker seemed like he couldn’t care less about the program and had only graced the event out of formality. And after watching him and noticing that he was one of the only ones as uninterested in the ceremony as him, fans couldn’t help but wonder just how robbed the legendary director was!

Real-life crime movies come with even more jeopardy because viewers know the criminals and victims are real. Heist movies often portray criminals as protagonists, making the audience root for them to succeed. Not all heist movies are based on real cases; most of them are works of fantasy.
Crime movies can take on a completely different tone when they are based on real life, and even heist movies often take inspiration from true stories. Movies based on real crimes are among the most popular in the crime genre. Goodfellas, The Untouchables and Zodiac all have added layers of jeopardy because the viewer knows that the criminals and the victims are all real. Heist movies don't take inspiration from real life as often as other crime movies. Heist classics like Point Break and Ocean's 11 are usually pure fiction.
The joy of heist movies is that the audience usually sides with the criminals.

Robert De Niro has solidified an indelible legacy with his marvelous acting career in the filmmaking world. With a career spanning six decades, he has been a part of remarkable projects like Mean Streets, The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Silver Linings Playbook, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Given his portfolio screams perfection in every manner, many would be naturally interested in his personal life.

During the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Robert De Niro chatted about his decades-long career, revealed a project he missed out on and shared his thoughts on the upcoming 2024 election.
The Oscar-winning actor kicked off his appearance by reacting to the Republican response to Biden’s State of the Union address Thursday night, when Alabama Sen. Katie Britt delivered a criticism of the president and his administration’s policies.
“I don’t understand why they’d even have someone like her do it,” De Niro said. “I mean, it was so lame.”
Following the primary elections in several states on Tuesday signaling another rematch between Biden and Donald Trump in November, Maher also asked the Killers of the Flower Moon star his perspective on the upcoming election — and De Niro had one question for his fellow Americans.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Film Editing Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Anatomy of a Fall” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Holdovers” (9/2).
Having previously bagged trophies for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Aviator” (2005), and “The Departed” (2007), Thelma Schoonmaker could now become this category’s first quadruple champion by winning for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The 84-year-old is also the first cutter to reach a total of nine nominations, with all but her first for “Woodstock” (1971) having come for films directed by Martin Scorsese. For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

The 1990s are regularly regarded as the era of the high-concept thriller. In the wake of eighties smashes like Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction, audiences tended to flock to these kinds of movies, although it’s worth noting they quickly spun off into two different mini-genres. There was the erotic thriller genre, whose queen was definitely Sharon Stone, with movies like Basic Instinct and Sliver, but there was also the so-called yuppie thriller.
These movies often centred around upwardly mobile middle-class couples who wind up in the crosshairs of a maniac who wants to dismantle their lives. Fatal Attraction was arguably the first of these. Still, many more would follow, including Pacific Heights, which featured Michael Keaton in a memorably evil role, Bad Influence (with Rob Lowe), Internal Affairs (which revitalized Richard Gere’s career), Malice, and the great Single White Female. But, of the genre, one of the most effective was 1992’s Unlawful Entry,...

The gangster genre has a sacred place in the hearts of film fanatics and was initially popularized by classic movies of Hollywood's Golden Age, such as The Public Enemy and Angels with Dirty Faces. During the New Hollywood Movement, the genre was revitalized by Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece, The Godfather, and has since become one of the most beloved film genres with modern hits like Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco. While there are hundreds of memorable mobster movies, there are some that are simply in a category of their own as being the all-time best.

“Oppenheimer” continued to steamroll its path to Oscar glory on Sunday night, claiming the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards.
Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Chuck Roven and their producing team took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, which recognizes excellence in producing for a theatrical feature film. The prize has become perhaps the most important precursor to nabbing the Academy Award for best picture.
Thomas told the crowd that many may not know that Nolan, the film’s writer and director, excelled most in his role as producer: “He’s absolutely brilliant, we’ve worked on 12 films now.”
Nolan himself noted that he and Thomas had never won the Zanuck award, despite previous nominations. “Every time we’ve been in this room, we’ve felt so much support,” he said.

Producer Daniel Lupi had worked for years with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and Steven Spielberg, but until Killers of the Flower Moon, he had never collaborated with Martin Scorsese. So when he got the call to come on board, it was a no-brainer. “How could you say no to Martin Scorsese?” he says. “He’s Martin Scorsese. Paul Thomas Anderson would probably say the same thing. Some of the shots in Boogie Nights, you could argue, were inspired by Goodfellas.”
Lupi came on board after the script for the adaptation of David Grann’s nonfiction book had already been rewritten to focus on the relationship between Lily Gladstone’s Mollie, an Osage woman, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart amid the genocide that Ernest participated in which targeted Mollie’s family. Amongst Apple TV+’s latest streak of hit drama TV series is the understated but incredible true story of Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) and serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), Black Bird. Owing to its brilliant casting, Mindhunter-like cinematography, and faithful adaptation of James Keene’s own 2010 memoir (In with the Devil), the series has received much critical acclaim, with many publications agreeing that the show is a fitting farewell to Goodfellas star Ray Liotta, in one of his last ever roles. Egerton’s performance as James (Jimmy) Keene himself is a brilliant focal point as well, where the actor plays the charming but arrogant, drug-dealing son of long-serving police officer (Liotta) with much vulnerability and pain underneath an apparent unflappable exterior.

The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlin International Film Festival kicks off Saturday night, where this year’s jury, headed by 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o, will hand out the coveted Gold and Silver Bears.
Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha’s Iranian drama My Favourite Cake is being given good odds for an award this year. The drama, about a 70-year-old widow and her tentative attempts at romance with an age-appropriate taxi driver, was a critical fave. A win for the film would also send a political message after the Iranian government banned the directors from attending Berlin. If the jury picks out Cake for the Golden Bear it would be the third time in 10 years —following Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (2015) and There Is No Evil (2020) from Mohammad Rasoulof —that Berlin has given its top honor to Iranian directors in absentia. Anatomy of a Fall French producer Marie-Ange Luciani put in a flying appearance at the Berlinale this week with Claire Burger’s coming-of-age drama Langue Étrangère which received a warm reception in competition.

“There’s market failure because the streamers came in, high-end TV got higher end, and Hollywood arrived. And they took a lot of our investors away,” Sixteen Films producer Rebecca O’Brien concluded when quizzed on the state of the UK indie film sector during an appearance at the UK’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry.
She added: “Some additional fiscal support for the sector is essential. I think we could really die without it.”
O’Brien appeared in front of the bipartisan committee this morning, where she discussed her decades-long experience producing features with Ken Loach, navigating the independent market of international co-productions and financing, and what must change for the UK indie industry to push forward.
The session began with O’Brien being asked how she and her team at Sixteen Films have managed to successfully produce and land distribution for the films of the company’s founder, Ken Loach.

In his tribute speech, Wenders described his old friend as “the reigning king of cinema” and said that over half a century of directing, Scorsese had become a trademark, almost brand.
“You could safely go into a movie theatre, sit down and know that with this next Martin Scorsese Picture, that was your your credit formula Marty, you were going to see a masterful film that would markedly define its time, not more not less,” he said.
He recalled how he and Scorsese had first hooked up while attending the Telluride Film Festival in 1978.

Martin Scorsese Talks Cinema, Lasagna and The Rolling Stones at Freewheeling Berlin Press Conference
Everybody loves Marty.
Martin Scorsese got a hero’s welcome in Berlin, greeting journalists at a jam-packed press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Feb. 20 — eager Marty fans were seen lining up two hours in advance to secure a seat — to receive rapturous praise from reporter after reporter.
“Thank you for making me the person I am today,” said one enthusiastic journo fan. One Georgian reporter invited him home for a glass of wine. Another, from Bulgaria, took a break from asking his question to act out his favorite scene from The Departed.
Most of the questions aimed at the ironic American director of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas were less softballs than soft soap, with reporters as interested in Scorsese’s favorite food — his mother’s lasagna recipe — as the movies in his peerless filmography.
Asked about his favorite 30-second moment, Scorsese joked, “You mean in cinema?”

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Funko Pop. Actually, that's entirely possible now, thanks to the Pop Yourself program available both in-store and online. Since "The Godfather" joined the roster of Funko POPs vinyl figures inspired by movies not too long ago, it only makes sense for another classic mob movie to get the same treatment. The "GoodFellas" Funko POPs give us pretty much every character that you'd want included. Zack Snyder is currently one of the most prominent directors in Hollywood, receiving both praise and criticism. While he has showcased his skills in directing a specific type of film, his work has also encountered criticism, and the reasons behind it are evident. He did not have anything to do with 2016’s Suicide Squad, but Snyder’s involvement in the Dceu certainly did no favors to the movie.
Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck working together
In fact, fans might not be shocked to know that 2016’s Suicide Squad took the Letterboxed top spot as the worst Oscar-winning film of all time, which is a very shameful achievement, to say the least. After all, the film ended up becoming one of the most hated films under the DC banner as it managed to do everything wrong.

Tribeca Festival Reschedules Robert De Niro Celebration “De Niro Con” to Coincide With 2024 Festival
The Tribeca Festival has once again rescheduled its “De Niro Con” celebration of festival co-founder Robert De Niro.
The event will now take place from June 14-16 to coincide with the 2024 Tribeca Festival, set to run from June 5-16 in New York City.
The fan event in celebration of De Niro’s 80th birthday was originally announced at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, during a star-studded private ceremony at the Tribeca Grill, and set to take place from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2023. But it was postponed until April 2024 amid the writers and actors strikes last year.
The latest delay, the festival said, was done to leverage the festival’s expanded footprint and reach, and make sure anyone attending the festival could also participate in the De Niro celebration.
De Niro turned 80 on Aug. 17, 2023. He has since earned awards acclaim, including an Oscar nomination, for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon, for frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese.

Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet, two of this year’s best director Oscar nominees, received the Santa Barbara International Film Festival‘s outstanding directors of the year award on Monday night.
The tribute, sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, featured 30-minute, sit-down conversations with each of the honorees about their careers and journeys to their currently celebrated films, moderated by THR‘s Scott Feinberg.
Anatomy of a Fall director Triet was up first. She touched on originally meeting the film’s star Sandra Hüller 12 years ago, watching The Boston Strangler “40 times before shooting” the best picture nominee as inspiration and her reluctance to reveal how the project truly ends: “I think I will speak in 10 years.”
Of the secret recording storyline that is featured in both Anatomy of a Fall and her 2019 film Sibyl, she also revealed, “When I was a young girl, I had a bad habit to record but now no.

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). Here are two words for those who believe Christopher Nolan can’t possibly lose the Best Director race at this year’s Academy Awards for “Oppenheimer”: Bob Fosse. And here are three more: Francis Ford Coppola.
When you think about how many consider Coppola’s 1972 masterpiece “The Godfather” to be perhaps the greatest American film ever made, it might shock them to learn that while the film won Oscars in ’73 for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Coppola lost the director race to Fosse for “Cabaret.” Nothing against Fosse or his iconic musical, but his win over Coppola was shocking even if deserved. The lesson is that you simply never know what might happen on Oscar night. “Oppenheimer” could clean up, as is being widely predicted, and Nolan could still somehow miss out even though all indicators tell us it’s a done deal.

When Martin Scorsese strikes up a relationship with his cinematographer, the collaboration tends to last for more than one film. Throughout his legendary career, Scorsese has worked repeatedly with such top names in the art of cinematography as Michael Chapman, Michael Ballhaus, Robert Richardson, and now Rodrigo Prieto. The acclaimed cinematographer, who was an Oscar nominee for “Brokeback Mountain,” has been at Scorsese’s side for the last four of the master filmmaker’s projects. During that run, Prieto has received three Oscar nominations for his artistry.
“It is crazy to imagine that I could even one day in my career say, ‘Yeah, it’s my third nomination with Martin Scorsese for an Oscar.’ What are you talking about?” Prieto, who was nominated this year for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It’s thrilling and I feel very privileged to be in this position.

Fans may not be aware of unofficial sequels to popular movies, typically produced by smaller studios, which introduce new characters and scenarios. These unofficial sequels are often of poorer quality but can still be fun to watch for some fans. Examples include unofficial sequels to Alien, Dawn of the Dead, Goodfellas, Night of the Living Dead, and Planet of the Apes.
Movie fans are often unaware of the existence of unofficial movie sequels that are produced without the creators of the original on board. Completely separate, smaller studios have produced off-beat sequels to some of the biggest sci-fi and fantasy movies ever. It is not uncommon for these sequels to introduce completely new characters in a setting that only resembles that of the preceding movie in the most basic ways. The fewer elements that strictly belong to someone else's story there are, the less likely the moviemakers are to be sued for copyright infringement.

Screen legends Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro have collaborated successfully for decades. Over time, Scorsese has seen something of himself in the characters De Niro has played, he told the BBC today.
Speaking on the Radio4 Today program, the Killers of the Flower Moon director praised De Niro for “touching a truth about what it is to be a human being and the acceptance of not only the good but the bad and the evil, to the extent where you may deplore his behaviour but as a character you still feel for him.”
Responding to a question on whether “there is a bit of you” in the characters that De Niro has played, Scorsese said: “I’m sure. I would think so. To deny it is something that is a lie.”

Throughout his epic, half-century-plus career there’s one genre Martin Scorsese hasn’t touched: the science-fiction film. However, for a new Super Bowl ad for Squarespace, the director and his daughter Francesca Scorsese have the genre on the mind. If Martin Scorsese is the greatest living filmmaker, then Thelma Schoonmaker is the greatest living film editor. It takes great craft and an understanding of film rhythm to assemble threeish-hour cuts that never run out of energy, and that's what Schoonmaker has done time after time with "Goodfellas," "The Departed," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and so forth.
Scorsese and Schoonmaker are an inseparable creative duo; they've been working together for more than 50 years. They met at New York University in the 1960s and she edited his feature debut, "Who's That Knocking at My Door." Schoonmaker has since edited every film that Scorsese directed going back to 1980's "Raging Bull." That hiatus in the 1970s wasn't due to a falling out; it was because Schoonmaker wasn't willing to play ball with member requirements for the Motion Picture Editors Guild. "Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Cathy Moriarty headlined the film's wildly talented ensemble, while late "Cheers" star Tommy Como played a local mobster and actress Theresa Saldana, who passed away in 2016, played protagonist Jake's second wife Lenora.
While time has taken some of these talented actors away from us, and the real Jake Lamotta died in 2017, each member of the "Raging Bull" core trio is still acting today. To present a "where are they now" about an actor as famous and prolific as De Niro would be silly, but if you're looking for another great De Niro...

There’s quite a lot going on beneath the shiny, fun surface of this animated comedy, though some of the questions it deals with — animal mortality, the world’s fragile eco-system — might be too much for younger children to process. For older, smarter kids, it could be a gateway film, a way to turn young cinephiles onto Powell and Pressburger’s 1946 masterpiece A Matter of Life and Death, with which it shares a little DNA. “Goodfellas” may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” but the Martin Scorsese crime drama served as inspiration for Nzingha Stewart, who directed four of the Amazon Prime Video series’ final five episodes. It’s a far cry from the first half of the series, when the upstart group was just trying to land its big break, and showrunner Scott Neustadter encouraged Stewart to make her block completely different from the first one.

Whenever Oscar nominations are announced, there seems to be less celebration of who is on the ballot than there is outcry over who isn’t. This year is certainly no different, with most of the attention over snubs directed towards Barbie’s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who both missed out in the directing and acting categories. But if you ask Whoopi Goldberg – an Oscar winner herself – there’s no such thing as a snub, saying, “Everybody doesn’t win.”
Speaking on The View (via Entertainment Weekly), Whoopi Goldberg – who won Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1990’s Ghost – said of the hooplah, “There are no snubs. That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective…The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”
