A television version of the film was prepared by director Martin Scorsese, which retained a good portion of the film's graphic violence. It also retained much of the profanity, minus the F- and S-words, which were dubbed over. Scorsese did a televised introduction upon the film's network premiere.
The Australian free to air television version when first aired on Channel 9 was heavily edited for violence and coarse language. Since the classification rules were relaxed, some scenes are still edited for violence to retain the M rating (in particular the opening scene, Henry Hill pistol whipping Karen's neighbour, and Billy Batts' beating, however the scenes featuring Spider are completely edited out). Some profanity is also edited out.
