Clip joint: Shopping malls

Help us sort through the racks for the best examples of shopping malls featured in film

This week's Clip joint is by Martyn Conterio. Think you can do better? If you've got an idea for a future Clip joint, send a message to adam.boult@guardian.co.uk

The shopping mall on screen: where bland commercialism meets high drama. Over the past 40 years, cinema has used this environment for all sorts of strange and unusual scenarios, ranging from Woody Allen comedies to zombie sagas. A major lure for film-makers and producers is the salient matter of dispensing with constructing an expensive set – there's already one there.

That Anywheresville quality to shopping-mall interiors lends various films a universal feel. Don't all malls look basically the same on the inside, dominated by bright lighting, displays, food courts, neat rows of shops, fountains and sculptures? Almost naturally, American movie-makers have utilised the mall for many, »

Monologue: Annette Bening. Still on the Grift.

21 May 2012 7:41 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

1990 was the year in which I saw the least amount of movies in theaters. I was overseas and when I returned I devoured everything. I don't recommend missing an entire year of cinema but I also can't deny that it's fun to catch up in massive marathons. My favorite shiny new  plaything that year turned out to be Annette Bening. She had appeared in two movies before her breakthrough (The Great Outdoors and Valmont, the latter of which was barely released) but I wasn't familiar with her. In 1990 she ascended. She swiped a scene wholesale from Meryl Streep in Postcards from the Edge (in a way we didn't see again for another 18 years when Viola Davis rationalized away her son in Doubt) and sparkled and teased as Myra Langtry in The Grifters. She deservedly won her first Oscar nomination but the bid was doomed. "You in danger, girl" Ghost was »

'Scandal' season finale recap: A new deal and burning questions

17 May 2012 8:20 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched Scandal’s season finale, stop reading now. If you have, dig in.

• Do we care as much about Quinn as we’re supposed to? Maybe it’s because I feel like everyone has seen enough TV procedurals to remember, even when you’re in shock after finding your lover dying on the floor, that You Don’T Remove The Scissors From His Neck because he will bleed out even quicker. But Quinn did, and after some notable splatter, Gideon died. Naturally, she called Olivia first. Quinn wanted to call the police, but Olivia »

'Scandal': Who's Still talking about last week's sexy flashback episode?

14 May 2012 5:05 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Like many a woman in her mid-30s, I’ve had a difficult time forgiving Tony Goldwyn for what his character did to Patrick Swayze’s in Ghost. That worked for his role on ABC’s Scandal: a president we were led to believe got a White House aide (Gilmore GirlsLiza Weil) pregnant after his mistress (Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope) ended their affair — and then possibly had the girl killed when she threatened to come forward — but who we wanted to like because Olivia had loved him. After last week’s episode, which flashed back to the start of their romance, »

Scandal's Tony Goldwyn: Flashback Episode Shows Soulmates In an Impossible Situation

10 May 2012 5:51 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

TVLine’s Times Square office this week was paid a visit by no less than the President of the United States — or, at least, Tony Goldwyn of ABC’s Scandal, who previewed Season 1′s penultimate episode (airing tonight at 10/9c), in which we learn through much-anticipated flashbacks how White House hopeful Fitzgerald Grant’s path first crossed with that of Olivia Pope. (Let’s just say the young fixer’s opening line is a real winner.)

Goldwyn also weighs in on his chemistry with series lead Kerry Washington, hails his chief of staff and hints at a surprise or two still to come. »

Demi Moore Becomes 'Justdemi' On Twitter

3 May 2012 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Demi Moore has officially moved on from estranged husband Ashton Kutcher after dropping his name from her Twitter.com account.

The actress returned to Twitter last month after a lengthy absence following a medical drama and a rehab stint for exhaustion in January, and she has spent the last three weeks trying to find a new handle to replace @mrskutcher.

On Thursday morning, the Ghost star told fans and friends she'd have a new tweet name "by the time I hit 5 mil (million) followers," and she followed that up with a new moniker hours later.

She wrote, "So hard finding a name that was fun somewhat playful and available. So for now it will be @justdemi It could grow on me!"

Minutes later she added, "Thanks everyone for your help in finding my new name!"

Moore and Kutcher separated at the end of last year. »

Movie Preview: A Little Bit Of Heaven (2012)

2 May 2012 10:27 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

A Little Bit of Heaven (2012) could be a showcase for Kate Hudson to demonstrate her maturing talent. The beautiful Kate has comedy down pat, now the gauntlet has been thrown and it will be interesting to see how she handles the challenge of this role. This movie's genres, Comedy, Drama, Romance, indicate it could be another An Affair to Remember (1957). Sniff, sniff, get ready to whip out the box of Kleenex. One of the supporting cast members, Oscar winner Kathy Bates, has already matured into one of the finest actresses of our time. Kathy took time out from her hit TV series, Harry's Law (TV) to portray Beverly Corbett. Another cast member, Peter Dinklage, who portrays Vinnie, has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the TV drama series Game of Thrones (TV). Whoopi Goldberg, another Oscar winner for her performance in Ghost (1990), makes her »

'Ghost: The Musical' almost as bad as Meat Loaf 'Hamlet'

27 April 2012 2:50 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

When the man behind me bolted after the first act of "Ghost: The Musical," saying "worst thing I ever saw on a stage" that sounded like the truth. He was also saving himself from what feels more like an assault than a Broadway show.

Veteran theatergoers all have their worsts. I saw Meat Loaf in purple tights do a rock version of Hamlet 36 years ago, and I still suffer flashbacks. That was my personal bottom and "Ghost: The Musical" works hard at coming close.

The debacle at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre prompts so many questions. Mainly: Why? Why mount a musical of a slight movie, which though beloved by some, has a pretty goofy plot? I adored Patrick Swayze. Who didn't? But if there are real ghosts, Swayze, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine should be haunting the theater to put a stop to this.

The slight plot is excusable because »

Ghost: Comfort Food Musical

Ghost Lunt-Fontaine Theatre, NY

Avid fans of Broadway musicals love nothing more than a thrilling, exhilarating show, but we also realize that isn't going to be the case all that often. While we love it when a musical strives for and achieves brilliance, sometimes we know going in that a show is not going to redefine the genre. In those cases, we can often be content with an evening of good entertainment. We can still analyze what was good and what wasn't, but if the show ultimately works for you, it would have succeeded. It is the Broadway equivalent of a popular popcorn movie or a good summer beach read. That was the case when I saw Ghost, the new Broadway musical, adapted from the hugely successful 1990 movie that starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg.

The movie won two Academy Awards and grossed over $500 million worldwide. The musical »

Caissie Levy Plays Demi Moore's Role in 'Ghost The Musical'

26 April 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Caissie Levy has been on Broadway before: as gung-ho political activist Sheila in the revival of "Hair," a replacement Elphaba in "Wicked," and Penny Singleton in "Hairspray." But originating a role in a new musical is a whole different ballgame -- especially when the musical is based on an iconic romance film. That's precisely the challenge that Levy faces as the leading lady in "Ghost The Musical," based on the 1990 movie starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and Whoopi Goldberg. Awash in video projections, foot-stomping dance numbers, and a potpourri of musical styles, "Ghost The Musical" recounts the intense love affair between artist Molly (Levy) and the ghost of her murdered lover (Richard Fleeshman), who manifests through the wild and wacky medium Oda Mae Brown (Da'Vine Joy Randolph). After a year of performance in London, Levy is no longer fazed by the inevitable comparisons with the movie; she has had »

Ghost The Musical: Theater Review

23 April 2012 6:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

New York – Full confession: The 1990 movie Ghost is on my top 10 list of that decade’s more shameless pleasures. Demi Moore with the Pierrot haircut and artfully applied teardrops; poor Patrick Swayze with his single expression of intense concentration; Whoopi Goldberg at her ghetto-fabulous funniest. What’s not to love? Turns out plenty in this leaden stage musicalization of the supernatural romantic thriller, a flavorless hash that is unrelentingly loud, vulgar and stunningly tone-deaf to the ways in which the world has changed since that era of sweet young yuppie innocence. 'Scandal' Star: The Stakes Get So High

19 April 2012 7:53 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Tony Goldwyn has spent the last few years behind the camera, directing everything from Dexter to Grey's Anatomy. But in meeting Shonda Rhimes through the latter, he was able to reinvigorate his love for acting (let us not forget his excellent performances in Ghost, Nixon and countless others) by playing President Fitzgerald Grant on Scandal.

After only two weeks, ABC's latest drama has transformed into one of their signature addictions and a lot of that has to do with the rocky relationship Goldwyn's "Fitz" shares with Kerry Washington's Olivia Pope. Goldwyn recently spoke with ETOnline and revealed why he couldn't pass up this gig and what's in store for the president's heart.

ETOnline: You've spent the last few years focusing on directing -- were you actively looking for an acting job?

Tony Goldwyn: I wasn't really, but I was open to it because I had been missing acting. Last year I »

The big blockbusters of summer 2013

17 April 2012 4:02 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises get set to do battle in the summer of 2012, what blockbusters are lining up for the summer of 2013…?

2012 marks, arguably, the biggest blockbuster showdown in recent years, with three major comic book franchises all going head to head. 2013 is a bit quieter in that regard, with just Superman and Iron Man, both with enough space to make a mark of their own.

In fact, the trend at the moment for summer blockbuster season 2013 is the end of the world to some degree. That’s along with the usual range of sequels, franchises and remakes. Here’s what’s currently in store, with dates based on Us planned release at the time of writing…

Blockbuster season 2013 kicks off not with a Marvel project, as has been the case the past few years, but with a Tom Cruise movie. Cruise, since »
