a woefully dismal remake and not a patch on the original.
micheal cimino is a talented and (to many) an infuriating film maker but along with this and his prior 'the sicilian' he really comes a cropper. the premise is promising; a strong cast and an engaging idea to update and alternate the original story about an escaped group of felons who are held up with a well to do american family soon becomes a botched, disappointing misfire. most of the scenes are poorly handled and are unintentionally funny particularly involving anthony hopkins giving a pretty confusing performance. **** me, he starts off at the beginning as a yank ("hi honey, i'm home!") and then halfway through ends up sounding like his captain bligh incarnation from 'the bounty'! throughout the movie he spends alot of time being hauled around and generally manhandled by mickey rourke who gives the best performance and is about the only redeeming feature of this sorry mess. mimi rogers supplys a typically bland, squeky clean supporting role as hopkin's long sufferring spouse though kelly lynch isen't too bad.
