The 'dis' in the title is street slang for 'disrespect', which is what horny GI James Haig shows to women and earns back in equal measure while trying over a weekend furlough to, in his words, get laid. Haig's character has a charismatic personality, but watching a desperate man failing to score can be as frustrating for an audience as it must be for him, especially since the script too often seems to be laughing with instead of at his stubborn love-'em-and-leave-'em attitude. But whatever failings the film may have, its lack of a budget isn't among them. By using grainy black and white stock and improvising the dialogue in front of a roving, hand-held camera, the co-directors not only avoid the shortcomings of a shoestring production, but also give the film a disarming vitality money can't buy. The results, even with the expected rap music padding, make it more than just another film school exercise.
