A deserted country, an earthquake.. In this story of wastelands, an old man is longing to overcome his own desperation. Coping with his mental and physical handicaps, he doesn't go away from where his young acquaintance remains trapped in the wreckage. They tell him that there is not enough rescue equipment and to leave the place for the man might already be death. However the protagonist goes against them and chooses struggling for impossible. Though we know that all the veins are blocked, he sees things in ways that we would never envision. Even when the young man passes away leaving the grieving man off and drowning hopes in the river of potentially grave memories.
As the story proceeds, Gireaudeau shows a dilemma between the profession of making things right and the unbreakable feeling that is caused by some miscontrolled pipe dreams. But he never says that determination of not to give up shows up as a poor pipe dream. He covers obstruct attention every moment. Nevertheless that's a realistic regard and a dark heavy story. No point to make it abnormal, if it's the desperation which is spoken, bad news comes inevitably.
One last thing I must mention is the extraordinary acting of Francisco Rabal, that's all.
