This comedy show launched the careers of the Rob Newman, David Baddiel, Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis. Newman and Baddiel went on to have their own show, as did Punt and Dennis. Newman and Baddiel were the more successful of the 2 duos. There last live show was the only comedy act to play and sell out Wembley Arena in London.
Despite the fame and popularity of the 4 comedians throughout the 90's, it's seems that the show that brought them to the attention of UK audiences was forgotten. Which is a great shame, as it was excellent. A hilarious mixture of stand up and sketches. Pre dating The Fast Show by three years, it's characters and catch phrases were just as popular as any on the Fast Show. But unlike The Fast Show, The Mary Whitehouse Experience has passed into the dustbin of history. Characters like Mr Milky Milky, catch phrase "Milky Milky" and the History Today Show, catch phrase "that's you that is" are no longer quoted in school classrooms and pubs, unlike the Fast Show's favorites.
The show's stand up sections got the foursome labeled new wave comedians, which may have been part of the problem. Getting associated with meaningless phrases that floated around the early 90's probably was why the show was never repeated. The fact that Mary Whitehouse has since died and not to many kids know who she was, also helped to buy the show in forgotten pile.
However, for a brief time in the early 90's teenagers and 20 something's across the land were treated to a slice of something special. Uniquely funny, and endlessly quotable. Shortly Lived.
