Remember when Captain Planet did an episode on AIDS?

Following the announcement of a new live-action film produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and their discussion on the Flickering Myth Podcast, Luke Owen looks back at the Captain Planet and the Planeteers episode “Formula for Hate”…

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, no subject was perhaps more taboo than HIV and AIDS. Though many had died previously, the disease became headline news when actor Rock Hudson died of AIDS in 1985 and it quickly became a hot topic of debate. Most media outlets were afraid to touch or broach the subject because public opinion swayed so much, mostly due to a lack of knowledge. Prolific comedian Eddie Murphy performed a routine about the fear of AIDS on his infamous Delirious show in 1983 where he says, “AIDS is scary because it kills motherfuckers… It petrifies me ‘cos girls be hanging out with them [homosexuals]. One night they could be in the club having fun with their gay-friend, »

Captain Planet Movie Is Happening with Producer Leonardo DiCaprio

18 October 2016 8:38 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Just because Leonardo DiCaprio is behind the new Captain Planet movie doesn't mean it will be any less cheesy than it sounds. The Oscar winning actor has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to bring the popular 1990s environmentally conscious superhero to the big screen. Leonardo DiCaprio's own Appian Way Productions will tackle this tale about keeping pollution down while uniting the nations of the planet to make Earth a better place to live.

The movie will be based on the 1990s cartoon series of the same name. Paramount is targeting Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter. When a deal is finalized with the two screenwriters, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio will move forward with their deal to produce the film through Appian Way. The company signed a first look deal with the studio back in March alongside Glen Powell. »

Leonardo DiCaprio and Glen Powell Join Forces for ‘Captain Planet’ Feature Film

18 October 2016 7:51 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

From 1990 to 1992, Tuner Program Services and Dic Entertainment presented “Captain Planet and the Planeteers,” an animated TV show that followed five teenagers empowered with the classical elements and the superhero Captain Planet to protect the world from environmental danger. Since then, “Captain Planet” has produced a sequel TV series that ran from 1993 to 1996,  a comic book series, video games, and of course, the Captain Planet Foundation, an organization that inspires and teaches youth about the environmental challenges facing the world today. But now it will soon become a feature film, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions and Paramount Pictures.

DiCaprio Set To Bring Captain Planet To The Big Screen?

18 October 2016 7:07 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Leonardo DiCaprio has quietly become something of an activist. With each passing year, the actor seems to inch closer to the kind of celebrity activist that folks like Sean Penn, George Clooney, and Angelina Jolie all are. He's also a smart businessman. DiCaprio sees that superheroes are all anyone is interested in these days, and so it looks like he's ready to merge his worlds a bit by adapting a beloved superhero for the big screen that actually has something to say about the world at large: Captain Planet.

The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that DiCaprio's Appian Way and Paramount Pictures are teaming up to bring an adaptation of Captain Planet And The Planeteers to a theater near you.

That's not all. They're already working hard to find writers for the project, as Paramount is courting Jono Matt and Glen Powell to pen the script.

Leonardo DiCaprio producing a Captain Planet movie

18 October 2016 4:31 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Paramount Pictures is teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way to produce a big screen reboot of the early 90s environmental cartoon Captain Planet, with Glen Powell (Scream Queens) and writing partner Jono Matt set to pen the script.

According to THR, the movie will take place years after the conclusion of the Captain Planet and the Planeteers TV show, “with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need them”.

Given its environmental themes, Captain Planet seems a perfect fit for DiCaprio, who will be producing the movie alongside Powell and Jennifer Davisson Killoran of Appian Way.

A Captain Planet movie was previously in development at Sony back in 2013, only for the rights to lapse before the studio could get it off the ground.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran for three seasons between 1990 and 1992, with a follow-up series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, »

Captain Planet Movie Coming, Leonardo DiCaprio Involved

Mike Cecchini Oct 18, 2016

By your powers combined, or at least the powers of some folks in Hollywood, a Captain Planet movie is in development.

This just in: Paramount is developing a Captain Planet movie. Remember Captain Planet? Captain Planet And The Planeteers was a somewhat preachy cartoon with an environmental message that ran from 1993-1996. Depending on how old you were at the time, you either have fond memories of it (and its brightly designed, but strangely mulleted title character) or found it insufferable (primarily because of his supporting cast of teenage 'planeteers'), but it's unlikely you've forgotten it.

Captain Planet would be summoned "by your powers combined" when the Planeteers would work together with their magic rings to fight villains with names like 'Hoggish Greedly.'

The nostalgia factor aside, there's some interesting talent involved in bringing the Captain Planet movie to life. For starters, Paramount is the studio »

Captain Planet Movie In The Works At Paramount

Time for a bit of early ’90s nostalgia here, as THR is reporting that Paramount Pictures and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company have partnered up to bring environmental superhero Captain Planet to the big screen.

Sony was actually working on an adaptation many years ago, but the rights have since lapsed. This incarnation of the project has actor Glenn Powell (Scream Queens, Everybody Wants Some) on board as co-writer along with Jono Matt, but there’s no word yet on whether he’ll also play a role in the movie.

For those that have never heard of the classic animated series or need a refresher, Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran from 1990 to 1992, and focused on a group of global youngsters who were given magical rings that could control the four elements of fire, earth, wind, and water, and an additional ring for heart. When they combined their »
