Beverly Hills, 90210 (TV Series 1990–2000) Poster

(1990–2000)

Trivia

Actor Douglas Emerson asked to be released from his role as Scott Scanlon because he had no interest in acting any more, and in fact he has completely retired from acting since, instead spending several years in the U.S. Air Force and starting a family.
When Shannen Doherty left the show, Drew Barrymore was offered a spot as her replacement, but Barrymore rejected it because she wanted to focus on her film career. Alyssa Milano was then for a while a strong contender, and Alicia Silverstone turned down the role before Tiffani Thiessen was cast.
In its early seasons, the show's episodes were issue-based until the producers decided it should become a teen soap opera.
The character of Dylan was only supposed to be on for one or two episodes, because Fox executives weren't sold on either the fictional character or Luke Perry's ability. Aaron Spelling used his own funds to pay Perry's salary during those initial episodes, and the positive audience response led Fox to approve his addition to the regular cast.
The character 'Jim Walsh' was ranked #41 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" (20 June 2004 issue).
Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling are the only six cast members to appear in both the Pilot and the Series Finale.
In the first season, when Donna tries out for school DJ, she is referred to as Donna Morgan. Throughout the entire show, her name is Donna Martin.
The house used for exterior shots of the "Walsh home" is not in Beverly Hills at all - it is 1675 East Altadena Drive, Altadena, California.
Lyman Ward played Jim Walsh in the pilot. The scenes were cut and re-shot with James Eckhouse.
Aaron Spelling created the character of Gina Kincaid especially for Vanessa Marcil.
"West Beverly" does not exist. Beverly Hills High School would not allow the use of their name in the series.
Brandon Walsh, played by Jason Priestley on the show, was also the name of Josh Brolin's character in The Goonies (1985).
Many changes after the pilot episode: The Walsh house changes to a different building (which explains the odd scenery behind James Eckhouse in the re-shot pilot scenes as it matches the Walsh house used in the remaining 10 years of the series, not the house used only in the pilot.) Also, Brandon's car changes from a Chevy Chevette in the pilot to a different model car in later episodes, referred to as "Mondale". Also, Luke Perry does not appear in the series pilot, he is first featured in the second episode. The building for "The Peach Pit" was also changed after a few episodes in season one.
Gabrielle Carteris was 29 years old when the series began.
Kristin Dattilo was up for the role of Brenda Walsh, but turned it down. She would later guest star as Melissa Coolidge in an episode of the first season. Beverly Hills, 90210: One Man and a Baby (1991).
Tori Spelling is not listed as part of the main cast in the pilot.
Hilary Swank was contracted for two years, but she ended up being fired after 16 episodes. Fortunately for her, two months later she got the role of Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry (1999).
Luke Perry auditioned for the role of Steve Sanders before later being cast as Dylan McKay.
The series ran from October 4, 1990 to May 17, 2000.
Terence Ford and Arthur Brooks both portrayed Dylan's father, Jack McKay, in two episodes before Josh Taylor assumed the role.

The house used for exterior shots of the "Beach apartment" is located in Hermosa Beach, California. The same house is seen in the movie My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988) with Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger.
Dylan's house exterior changed without him moving. The first outside shots showed a white house in a comfy neighborhood. Later it showed a dark wood house set back from the street and down a slight incline.
At the start of filming the show, Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh) was 19, Jennie Garth (Kelly Taylor) was 18, Tori Spelling (Donna Martin) was 17, Jason Priestley (Brandon Walsh) was 20, Luke Perry (Dylan McKay) was 23, Brian Austin Green (David Silver) was 17, Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders) was 26, and Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea Zuckerman) was 29.
Although the character Valerie Malone mentions Brenda Walsh as a close family friend, Shannen Doherty and Tiffani Thiessen never once appeared together in a scene on the entire show. Thiessen was only cast as a replacement following the departure of Doherty and this was only explained as a reason for the relationship between the characters by including her on the show.
Canceled on 24 January 2000.
In the first season Donna Martin's mother was named 'Nancy Martin' and played by actress Jordana Capra when she was reintroduced in season 2 she was named 'Felice Martin' and was now played by actress Katherine Cannon.
Potomac, Maryland, Darren Star's hometown, was the inspiration for the show.
"Mondale" is a 1978 Mercury Cougar.

Executive producer Charles Rosin would work six to six and a half days a week, 12 to 16 hours a day, 11 to 11 and a half months a year on the show.
Brandon's car nicknamed the 'Mondale' was named after Walter Mondale. Mondale was Minnesota's senior U.S. Senator during the late 1970's and early 1980's, and was chosen by the Democratic Party to run for President in 1984, only to suffer a brutal landslide defeat to incumbent Republican President Ronald Reagan.
Aaron Spelling created the character of musician, Ray Pruit especially for Jamie Walters after he had worked with him on a previous Fox TV series, The Heights (1992).

In the pilot, Brenda tells her date she's a Junior at West Beverly. Which means they would have graduated at the end of the second season. But they didn't graduate until the end of the third.

In 2016, Gabrielle Carteris (who played Andrea Zuckerman) became president of SAG-AFTRA (the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). As one of her first causes as SAG president, Carteris, who was often singled out for ridicule because she was over a decade older than most high school graduates when Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) started, took up Califonia Bill AB 1687, which would require entertainment websites and databases (such as IMDb) to remove actors' ages if they request that. When the bill passed, Carteris released a statement saying that the new law would help prevent age-based discrimination in Hollywood and "career damage caused by the publication of performers' dates of birth on online subscription websites used for casting like IMDb."
