The alphabet network hasn't had much luck launching successful new shows. What's more, a lot of their existing shows are down year-to-year. Thankfully, the execs can't cancel everything.

New ABC shows (so far): Back in the Game, Betrayal, The Goldbergs, Lucky 7, Marvel's Agents of Shield, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Super Fun Night, and Trophy Wife.

Returning shows (so far): 20/20, America's Funniest Home Videos, Castle, Dancing with the Stars, Grey's Anatomy, Last Man Standing, The Middle, Modern Family, Nashville, The Neighbors, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Scandal, and Shark Tank.

There's lots of data that ABC execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. Here's an updated listing of all of their current primetime shows. »

TV Ratings: Sunday viewers shun Miley Cyrus as 'Unforgettable,' 'Rising Star' lead split

7 July 2014 8:45 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Sunday, July 6, 2014. CBS had Sunday's top show overall ("60 Minutes") and Sunday's top show among young viewers ("Big Brother"), but thanks to weak key demo performances by "Reckless" and "Unforgettable," the network only won the night in one of those measures. Instead, it was ABC topping Sunday among young viewers as "Rising Star" won both of its hours among adults 18-49.  Sunday's only other notable was NBC's late-announced "Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour" special, but the two-hour celebration of music and family-friendly kink was a dud in all measures. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.1 rating for Sunday night, edging out the 1.0 rating for CBS in the key demographic. Fox was a close third with a 0.9 key demo rating, while NBC averaged a 0.7 key demo rating for Sunday night. Overall, though, CBS dominated with an estimated 6.14 million viewers and a 3.9 rating/7 share for Sunday primetime. »

TV Ratings: 'Reckless' struggles, 'Rising Star' dips, and 'Big Brother' leads Sunday

30 June 2014 8:45 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Sunday, June 29, 2014. The second week of ABC's "Rising Star" dipped from its premiere, though ABC still tied for the Sunday lead among young viewers thanks to a weak launch for CBS' "Reckless." Despite a solid lead-in from the time period premiere of "Big Brother," "Reckless" formed a crater in the middle of CBS' Sunday lineup, forcing "Unforgettable" to bounce back in the 10 p.m. hour, helping CBS win the night overall. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC and CBS both averaged a 1.1 rating for Sunday night, tops in the key demographic. NBC and Fox both averaged a 0.9 key demo rating for the night. Overall, though, CBS won Sunday primetime comfortably, averaging an estimated 6.1 million viewers and a 4.0 rating/7 share for the night. ABC was well back in second with 4.49 million viewers and a 2.6/5, followed by NBC's 3.11 million viewers and a 1.9/3. Fox averaged 2.02 million viewers and a 1.2/2 for the night. »

Ros Journal (6/10/14): Spielberg, Scorsese & Lucas... the Future of Movies Circa 1990

10 June 2014 11:14 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I came across something today that is endlessly fascinating, a "Siskel & Ebert" television special from 1990 where Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel sit down with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The discussion ranges from their careers, where they're going, where they've been, what they expect from the movies in the future, film preservation and the coming of high definition television introduced by Siskel saying, "You add a good sound system as well and some people may never want to go to a movie theater again." At the time, Scorsese's GoodFellas was the next film coming from the trio and he makes mention of his want to make The Age of Innocence, which would be released three years later. Spielberg's next film would be Hook (1991) and even talks of wanting to direct a Howard Hughes movie, which, of course, Spielberg would never make, but Scorsese would tackle in The Aviator fourteen years later. »

TV Ratings: 'Cosmos' and 'Bachelorette' lead Sunday split, while 'Enlisted' return fizzles

2 June 2014 8:45 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Sunday, June 1, 2014. ABC's two-hour "Bachelorette" special was weak outside of the series' normal Monday home, but still helped the network tie "Cosmos"-fueled Fox for the Sunday night crown among young viewers. Overall, CBS led the way with "60 Minutes," which was Sunday's most watched show. Despite an admirable guerrilla promotional campaign from the show's creator and stars, canceled-but-beloved "Enlisted" failed to make even a small ripple in its return to primetime, coming in below a repeat of "American Dad." [The "Enlisted" demo number was steady with its most recent Friday airing back in March. But that's not exactly good news.] There was better news, not that it matters, for NBC's canceled "Believe" and "Crisis," which were both up week-to-week.  On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, Fox and ABC averaged a 1.0 rating for Sunday night, tops in the key demographic. NBC's 0.9 key demo rating and the 0.6 key demo rating for CBS trailed. Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 5.14 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/6 share for Sunday night, »

TV Ratings: Fox's Nascar coverage leads Sunday as deceased 'Believe,' 'Crisis' dip

26 May 2014 8:09 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Sunday, May 25, 2014. The first Sunday of TV's summer delivered predictably low numbers across the board, with Fox's coverage of the Sprint Cup in Concord dominating the night in all measures.  Not-so-shockingly, despite a near-total lack of competition, NBC wasn't able to attract any new eyeballs to the already-cancelled-trinity of "American Dream Builders," "Believe" and "Crisis." And otherwise, Sunday was a dud. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, Fox averaged a 1.6 rating for Sunday night, tops in the key demographic. Fox's key demo rating equalled the combined totals for ABC (0.7), NBC (0.5) and CBS (0.4) in the key demo.  Overall, Fox averaged an estimated 6.74 million viewers and a 4.0 rating/8 share for Sunday primetime. There was a big drop to CBS' 3.79 million viewers and 2.6/5 and to ABC's 2.2/4 and 3.48 million viewers. NBC averaged 2.31 million viewers and a 1.6/3. 7 p.m. - Fox's Nascar coverage swept the primetime hours starting with 6.495 million »

DVR Gridlock 2014-15: Sunday Nights

25 May 2014 1:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

[As is my recent tradition, over the next six days, I'm going to be glancing, night-by-night, at how the primetime schedules have changed after the network announcements at upfronts. I'll be looking at how the various changes will impact the ratings races on each night, as well as my own DVRing habits. Readers can chime in on how their own DVRs will be impacted. And yes, this brief series assumes that anybody still watches TV on their TVs. I'm old-fashioned. It also assumes that you/I only have a dual tuner DVR (plus occasional access to a Slingbox on Et. Check out last year's DVR Gridlock installments and the DVR Gridlock segments for 2012.] Sunday Nights 7:00 p.m. ABC: "America's Funniest Home Videos" CBS: "60 Minutes" Fox: "The Ot," "Bob's Burgers" NBC: NFL Pre-Game 8:00 p.m.  ABC: "Once Upon a Time" CBS: "Madam Secretary" Fox: "The Simpsons," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" NBC: Sunday Night Football 9 p.m. ABC: "Resurrection" CBS: "The Good Wife" Fox: "Family Guy," "Mulaney" NBC: Sunday Night Football 10 p.m. ABC: "Revenge" CBS: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"/"CSI: Cyber" NBC: Sunday Night Football What's Changed: A lot, actually! Last year, the networks barely touched Sunday and even though nobody had a disastrous time on the night (other than NBC in the spring, I suppose), several networks felt the desire to shake things up dramatically. Fox, for example, has moved two live-action comedies -- "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Mulaney" -- into a block that has been largely Animation Domination in recent years. CBS has moved "Madam Secretary" into the 8 p.m. slot and transplanted »
