At the end of each month, the Sound On Sight staff will band together to write an article about their favourite scenes in films released. Here are our favourite scenes from the month of April.

Rebelle - Friendly ghost warning

There are a host of wonderful moments in this picture, but it is those which spoke to the film’s pseudo-supernatural nature that I remember most fondly. The protagonist’s connection to the spirit world has see see the ghosts of the dead at various moments. The nondescript actors portraying the spectres are painted in white from head to toe and their eyes are equipped with some strange contact lenses, thus perfectly whitening them as well. The ghosts are not scary per say, but definitely a creepy, odd addition to the picture, with their first ever appearance being the most effect, »

Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon returned a year later with another Hp Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Rob looks back at a great, goo-filled 80s horror…

There's been some discussion that some of weird fiction writer Hp Lovecraft’s more grand ideas would not translate that well onto film or television. That the bizarre horrors that lurk in the dark corners of his universe are better implied or hinted at rather than slapped onto the screen with CGI.

While I, along with other fans, still wonder what Guillermo del Toro’s take on At The Mountains Of Madness might have been like, these ideas need a budget of millions – the grandeur of Cthulhu rising from the ancient city of R'lyeh, which fans have held in their imaginations since the 1930s, would be expensive to replicate. But there are still many Lovecraft myths that would be much cheaper to adapt.

Brian Yuzna is an under appreciated director, starting out as the producer on three Stuart Gordon movies, Dolls, From Beyond, and Re-Animator. Yuzna has directed the later two Re-animator films, Return Of The Living Dead 3, Silent Night, Deadly Night 4, both the Dentist films, and a handful of other horror films, but they all started in '89 with Society.
