Deck the halls...with severed limbs!
23 March 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

It still amazes me that after the controversy of the first film that they were able to get to part 2, and then part 3, which both sadly and gladly ended the "Santa Claus Killer" storyline. What's interesting about 3 though is that although it has some blood and violence, it's much less mean-spirited than it's predecessors and instead is more of a surreal black comedy. It also features a much more subdued, but still very deadly killer in Ricky, this time played by Bill Moseley. Though not a classic by an stretch, this second sequel does hold a special place in my heart.

Pros: Moves along at a slow, but totally even pace. Good acting all around, especially by Samantha Scully and Robert Culp. The latter actor brings some humor to the film. The premise is good and a little different than before. There's plenty of the red stuff and some gore. A decent score, the best part being the opening theme. The isolated setting is a nice change of pace. The opening sequence is kind of trippy and creepy.

Cons: Though the kills are plenty, most are off-screen. Bill Moseley does the best he can as Ricky, but the new Ricky is nowhere near as fun to watch as Eric Freeman's portrayal in part 2. The telepathic subplot is a good angle, but they don't explore it as much as they could have.

Final thoughts: Like part 2 this second sequel is different in tone than it's predecessors, but this is a plus though because it means the makers of the film are doing their own thing instead of imitating what came before, while respecting the storyline set by the first two without disrupting the continuity. Though not the campy fun of it's predecessors, this one is good in it's own right and a decent end to the storyline.

My rating: 3.5/5
