Surprisingly good and thrilling film about a newspaper crew
18 April 2015 | by See all my reviews

This is neither a typical HK goofy comedy, nor a full blown action film. Yet it's a movie that has many comedic moments and heart pumping action, but also some truly dramatic elements. It's surely an entertaining and captivating ride. Who could have ever thought that a film about reporters could be so thrilling?

The story follows a young and somewhat 'green' journalism graduate who gets a job in a big time HK newspaper and soon forms an inseparable friendship with two other male reporters: one - an idealistic veteran, the other - a crazy and adventurous 'cool cat'. The trio soon uncovers some dirty secrets about a powerful business tycoon while the protagonist forms a bond with the same tycoon's girlfriend - a chillingly beautiful HK pop star. It soon becomes clear that messing with the big shot businessman becomes a very dangerous affair for the main guys..

Fun. Action. Sweet romanticism. Terror. Tragedy. Drama. Thrills. More Fun. It has it all.

What separates the action in this film from other HK movies of this period is that the lead characters in this one are no superheroes - they don't know no kung fu - that makes the not so few fight and chase moments (the movies has one of the best foot chase scenes I've seen) that much more exciting.. This movie surprised and excited me - go for it!

P.S. As a food for thought this film has a few moments about the characters contemplating on news journalism. Considering the ongoing doubts about the future of HK's freedom of press, it's amazing and yet eerie (at least to me) to see one character (in a movie that's made in 1989) wonder what it'll be like to be a reporter after 1997 (HK's transfer to China). I sure miss this old Hong Kong.
