Storyline

An American intelligence agent uncovers a plot to assassinate Soviet Premier Gorbachev just at the time when glasnost is coming into place. The Russian old-guard, however, has captured five American spies and plans to make it look like they are the ones who have gunned down the Premier, thereby re-opening the cold war and returning Russia to its Stalinistic ways. Goofs

When the coach is traveling through the streets of West Berlin, the man sitting next to Jack Grant tells him the border crossing is just around the next corner. The coach is seen passing the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and then arriving at Checkpoint Charlie a few seconds later. Both landmarks are several miles apart and the church shown is deep inside West Berlin, nowhere near the East German border. See more »

The Deceiver
6 February 2010 | by (Netherlands) – See all my reviews

Based on the incident which started WW II (German officers dressing up as Polish border troops and causing an incident), this spy-thriller is quite entertaining.

Sam MacReady is played by Alan Howard (featured in Forsyth's book The Deceiver). It is the start of a series of films in which Howard is the instigator / motivator of the action.

It is true to the book, whilst not being an actual chapter of the work, which leads me to wonder whether this was an original screenplay, or whether the book came about later.

A shame this hasn't had a decent release on DVD yet. Region 2 that is.
