An intriguing TV movie.
15 February 1999 | by (London, England) – See all my reviews

It isn't uncommon for TV movies to be based around 'True stories' or 'True events,' with seemingly endless amounts of them dedicated to tragic accidents or diseases, normally affecting normal, middle-class households in modern America. A majority are melodramatic rubbish; some are good, and, sometimes, the occasional one can turn out to be a very special - Steven Spielberg's "Duel" is one such example. And, indeed, whilst Larry Elikann's movie "I know my first name is Steven" isn't quite as suspenseful or as exciting as the former picture, it remains highly entertaining, gripping and emotional. This is some achievement as the film has a running time of around three hours, although the truly extraordinary story that the movie has to tell is partially due to its success.

Young Steven Stayner is just seven years old, when he mysteriously disappears outside his school one day before Christmas. Months of searching and interviews lead the Police nowhere, and, in the end, they can only assume he must have been kidnapped and murdered. Years pass, but the family, particularly Steven's father, are unable to put the tragedy of their son behind them. Then, one evening some seven years on, the Police contact the family to inform them that their missing boy has voluntarily and mysteriously walked into a Police-station and told them everything. Slowly, the mystery surrounding Steven's disapperance is unraveled, as we learn of the boy's whereabouts in the last seven years, being brought up and looked after by the sick, psychopathic child molester Kenneth Parnel.

"I know my first name is Steven" tells its story in two halfs - The first is an account of Steven's life with evil Parnel, whilst the second part is the consequences that occur after Stayner has been discovered. The BBC have broadcast the movie at least twice, and showed it in two parts on the last air.

The acting in the movie is good, though the film shows its made-for-TV origins throughout, particularly in some very basically directed and blandly shot scenes, most prominent at the start. The fact that this is a TV movie also means the picture is very limited in portraying even a fraction of the torment Steven suffered during his period living with Parnell, meaning the audience are often left to guess just how severe (Or unsevere) the abuse was that Steven went through during this part of his life, as well as many other questions e.g. How did Parnell get round the seemingly impossible task of showing Steven's 'New' school his education files when he enrolled?

However, the film tells the story in a structural, professional manner, only going slightly downhill in the latter section of part two, where the story seems to drag on a little. As well as the film telling the story of the boy's abduction and his life with Parnell, it's also an interesting study of the consequences afterwards. When Steven returns to his family, he discovers that life, in many ways, is now worse than what it was - Being apart from his mum and dad and brothers and sister for so many years has meant that their relationships have diminished and they no longer know each other.

An interesting movie that sticks in the mind long after viewing, this is a flawed but well above average TV film that tells an important story grippingly. Recommended.
