Review: ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ is a Polite Adaptation That Steers Off-Course

Sherlock Holmes was successfully given the cinematic and television treatment this last century, both of which been met with hardcore followings and a renewed appetite for the old-school whodunit. Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlocks were both oddly different interpretations of the famous detective, but the fresh and personal touch both actors brought to the characters made them likably inventive.

However, Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, equally legendary to Holmes–at least in my book–has not been given the same treatment in recent popular culture. So, it was with great anticipation that Kenneth Branagh has adapted what might just be Christie’s most famous novel, “Murder on the Orient Express.” The cast assembled for this cinematic affair is justifiably impressive, with Branagh himself playing the crucial role of Poirot as he interrogates his way through a steaming train, looking for a murderer.

Review: Branagh's 'Murder on the Orient Express' is Old-Fashioned and Stiflingly Stodgy

First published in 1934, Agatha Christie's novel, Murder on the Orient Express, is considered one of the most suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever written. The book, which concerns the murder of a wealthy businessman aboard a luxury train, features one of Christie's most famous & long-lived characters, detective Hercule Poirot. The Belgian sleuth with a magnificent mustache has appeared in more than 30 novels and 50 short stories and has been portrayed on radio, in film, and on TV by various actors, including Albert Finney, Sir Peter Ustinov, Tony Randall, Alfred Molina, Orson Welles, and David Suchet. Now, 83 years after its debut, Murder on the Orient Express receives another lavish, star-studded film adaptation, this time by actor-turned-director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), who also stars. If you haven't read Christie's novel or seen one of its many previous adaptations, Orient Express begins in 1930s Istanbul with Poirot (Branagh) meeting up with his old friend,

“It’s been a great year and I’m enjoying every moment of it,” says Branagh, who will be honored with an imprint ceremony Oct. 26 in the Tcl Chinese Theatre forecourt. “Doing ‘Dunkirk’ was an experience I’ll never forget, and considering that I loved Sidney Lumet’s original and Agatha Christie’s novel, I’m excited to be bringing this new version of ‘Orient Express’ to life. I love train films and confined thrillers, and by doing it in 70mm, we really wanted to put the audience on that

Why such fuss about a female Doctor? | Letters

Readers respond to the news that Jodie Whittaker will play the Time Lord in Doctor Who

Of course we must applaud the arrival of Jodie Whittaker in the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who (Time for change, G2, 18 July). After all, think of all those young men who took the best female parts in Shakespeare’s day. There’s a lot of redressing to do. Really though, the revolution is not all that great. The Doctor is a shape-changer, so it’s not such a big step to become a sex-changer too. We need something more. Female actors have taken male roles in living memory – think Fiona Shaw as Richard II, though Richard was neither hero nor heroine (perish the word). A performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream I have just witnessed in the new Chester theatre points the way: Lysander is played by a black female actor

Steven Berkoff on Returning to Movies, Crowd-funding Shakespeare (Exclusive)

Steven Berkoff on Returning to Movies, Crowd-funding Shakespeare (Exclusive)
British actor and playwright Steven Berkoff, whose credits include “A Clockwork Orange” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” has started a crowd-funding campaign with his production partners to get a theatrical release of his new film, “Shakespeare’s Heroes & Villains.”

Although his last major film outing was 2011’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” with Daniel Craig, Berkoff told Variety that he now plans to focus on the big screen.

He recently finished shooting two new films back to back: “Tell Tale Heart,” based on the Edgar Allen Poe short story, and “Shakespeare’s Heroes & Villains,” a big-screen version of a stage play he wrote called “Shakespeare’s Villains.” He has performed the one-man show worldwide since its London debut in 1998.

U.K.-based Red Rock Entertainment financed both films, but has not secured a distributor. Berkoff and the films’ director, Stephen Cookson (“Stanley A Man Of Variety”), launched the crowdfunding campaign on the LiveTree.com platform to get the Shakespeare film into cinemas.

The scope of “Shakespeare’s Heroes and Villains” has been expanded from the play to take in the Bard’s heroes, including Henry V, who were not in the stage version. “It was an idea I had in mind, having done the villains, to have another track and to make the film different from the play,” Berkoff said. “The performance, intensity and analytical elements of the play happened on stage, and we tried to find an interpretation we could commit to film.”

The script will be published by Bloomsbury as a resource for acting students and Shakespeare scholars, but the film will be pitched at arthouse moviegoers, Cookson said. Berkoff also hopes that the film will air on television.

Berkoff says film has become increasingly commercial, with less room for radical voices, and admits he “doesn’t see a great deal of hope in the movie world.” He does, however, want to focus on features for a while, including more adaptations of his own plays.

Miracle Of Dunkirk Featured In New Poster

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle,
