Happy...TOGETHER!
20 December 2002 | by (THE STATES) – See all my reviews

In a world of college mishaps this film would fit in quite well. When mundane student Chris is paired up with wacky and zany Alexandra, all hell-and love breaks loose! A great comedy for the mid aged at heart has Patrick Dempsey as usual being a shy and cautious young man. Helen Slater-on the other hand-is a real stand-out. She plays her character out and expands her acting abilities and we the audience can really take a chance to look at her for her acting ability and not her looks-which is what MOST people looked at her for in the first place. Helen Slater is a truly gifted actress who still hasn't been seen for all she's worth. The film, as a whole, suffers from length and not enough explanation in some scenes. But this does nothing of the sort to mar the experience. The laughs are on and so are the moments that remind of us who we were in college and how that shaped us for who we are now. The film also has other deeper lengths, in one particular scene, when Alexandra finds that the boys have labeled her a "Whore of the Hill" and the drama of the movie shakes through. Dempsey is the material for which this film has it's strongest points, but Slater is the true gem, as she holds the film together with her honest and slick portrayal of a wacky, good hearted acting student. *** out of ****!
