Goes a little too far with the silliness
17 March 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

If done right, a film that mixes Horror and Comedy is golden. The trick is to create a delicate balance between the two. Films like 'Dead Alive' and 'House' are a couple sterling examples of this going well. Too often though, the opposite is the case. The first two 'Ghoulies' movies have their share of humor, but never took it to the nth degree. It took three years, but another chapter was added to the series. As with II, it's different than it's predecessors. However, this time they put the humor in high gear and the result is uneven.

Pros: Good work by the actors. Fun score. Quite good special effects. Brisk pace. Some of the goofy humor is amusing. Some neat ideas, such as bringing the little buggers back with a magic comic book.

Cons: Little in the way of plot. Most of the humor falls flat. Making the Ghoulies talk and spout off one-liners was a mistake. Runs out of steam by the third act. The Horror has been toned down compared to the first two.

Final thoughts: It's obvious that a film called 'Ghoulies Go to College' won't be serious. That being said, did the humor really have to be so juvenile? The death scenes are absolutely ridiculous. Still, despite all it's faults, this installment is fun to watch. Would be better if it were with some friends though. Go no further than this one unless you're a completist.

My rating: 2.5/5
