Was that Nixon playing himself?
30 December 2001 | by (Den Haag, the Netherlands) – See all my reviews

Power corrupts, and I think most of us know this, and Nixon was definately a victim of his own personality. Despite being (in my opinion) one of the better presidents when it came to policy (especially foreign, we still owe him a debt of gratitude for starting the end of the Cold War) his darker side brought him down.

The basis for his behaviour in the White House was laid in the election of 1960 which he "lost" to John Kennedy, nowadays many people, including democrats believe the election was indeed stolen from him. He vowed to himself to play as dirty as possible in the election of 1968 and he set out his men on devious schemes to wreck the oppositions hopes of election.

These events caught up with him with the news of the Watergate burglary. Nixon and his men tried to cover up (which what this movie is all about) but it got out of hand. If he had apologized in 1972 before the election the people might still have chosen him, and this would never have happened.

The movie picks up from the moment top advisers Haldeman and Ehrlichman were fired (of course the official version is they resigned). Just watch the events unfold and watch Nixon become a reclusive, suspicious wreck. When you finish watching you'll wonder whether that was Nixon playing himself. Lane Smith really did it.

I wonder if the real Nixon ever saw this one...10 out of 10
