Apparently, the Als Ice Bucket challenge is the hottest fad in Hollywood. Countless celebs, including Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Ben Affleck, Shakira, Selena Gomez, David Beckham and many more, have all posted videos of themselves being doused in freezing cold water in order to promote awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als)—with Emma Stone being the latest to on the viral bandwagon.  Of course, The Help star adorably nominates her beau Andrew Garfrield and even manages to keep her composure while having icy water dumbed on her head. "I accept the nomination for the Als Ice Bucket Challenge and I hereby nominate Bill Murray, Andrew Gar-Field of Dreams, and Dame Maggie Smith," the »

‘Spider-Woman'? ‘Ghostbusters'? Can Women Save the World and Sony, Too?

4 August 2014 4:57 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

What's next for Sony Pictures, “Women in Black” or “Bad Girls?” As Sony talks to “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig about writing an all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot, the studio has doubled down on its progressive development efforts by hiring Lisa Joy Nolan to write a female superhero movie set in the “Amazing Spider-Man” universe, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. Even before Amy Pascal took its creative reins, Sony has long been an equal-opportunity studio — producing “A League of Their Own” in the early-90s amidst male-driven baseball movies such as “Field of Dreams” and “Major League,” as well as. »

7 Unsettling Thoughts I Had While Watching The New Interstellar Trailer

30 July 2014 2:23 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

During Comic-Con, Paramount showed off a ton of new footage for Christopher Nolan's cautionary space tale "Interstellar." That trailer is finally up for the rest of the world to see and it is appropriately epic with its sweeping vistas showcasing the grandeur of space. But under the beguiling distraction of just how darn pretty interstellar travel is, some pertinent problems lurk. Things like... #1 - Filmmakers sure do love the heartland. We open on the farm from "Signs." Or is this the farm from "Transformers" or maybe even the farm from "Field Of Dreams?" Man, Hollywood has a weird corn field fetish now that I think about it. What is it about mazie that just attracts aliens and disembodied voices and sentient robots to meddle in the affairs of fathers who just want to raise their daughters, dagnabit? #2 - Michael Caine is a lying liar, pants on fire. Oh really Alfred Pennyworth? »

Gaby Hoffmann's Paranoid Thriller Lyle Will Premiere Online For Free Next Week

30 July 2014 7:10 AM, PDT | | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Gaby Hoffmann has transitioned well as the child star of Now and Then and Field of Dreams, embracing adulthood and a career resurgence with nuanced performances for last year.s festival hit Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus and her recurring role on HBO.s Girls. Hoffmann's next project is something else entirely, as she.s starring in the Rosemary.s Baby-ish horror Lyle, the first feature from writer/director Stewart Thorndike. Perhaps as interesting as the film itself, Thorndike and producer Alex Scharfman are distributing the film via online streaming.for free. On Monday, August 4, anyone can head to the Lyle website to stream the film in its entirety at no charge. Now, it.s not completely unheard of for indie movies to hit the net first, but it usually involves something that no one would want to spend money on in the first place. (Humble opinion.) Jeff Bridges linked to Antwerp, Jj Abrams producing

20 July 2014 10:53 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Jeff Bridges is set to take the lead in a story of a sizeable diamond heist....

One of the films being produced by Jj Abrams under his Bad Robot umbrella is Antwerp, a movie based on a Wired article by the name of 'The Untold Story Of The World's Biggest Diamond Heist'. Joshua Davis penned the article, and it's the story fo a 2003 burglary. You can probably guess where it took place.

The screenplay was originally being penned by Field Of Dreams' Phil Alden Robinson, but those duties have since been passed over to Doug Jung. Abrams will produce, but as of yet, no direct has been attached to the project.

It might just be getting its star though. The Tracking Board reports that Jeff Bridges is now in talks to take the lead role in the film, which Paramount Picture is backing. Good lead roles for Jeff Bridges? »

Kickstarter Campaign Gives You 10 Seconds to Run; Ghost Captured in Pitch Video?!

17 July 2014 12:31 PM, PDT | | See recent Dread Central news »

In addition to daily writings here on Dread, I also write for a fairly new website called iHorror, which I'm excited to report is making the move into feature film territory. Their first co-production is titled 10 Seconds to Run, and it'll only get made with Your help!

A joint production between Iyrus Entertainment and iHorror, 10 Seconds to Run is the story of a group of five friends driving to an electronic music festival. What was supposed to be a fun road trip ends up being a deadly mistake when they find themselves on a country road without cell and Gps service.

The friends become victims of a game that a few of the local backwoods residents like to play called "10 Seconds to Run." Players have 10 seconds to try to escape, and every new game has an added challenge to slow the victim down. The game is part of a bigger »

Mark Wahlberg Is ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’?

8 July 2014 1:10 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Six million dollars really isn’t a lot of money these days. Certainly not to Mark Wahlberg, who is reportedly in the frame to play technologically-enhanced Steve Austin in Universal’s cinematic reboot of The Six Million Dollar Man. For those too young to remember the simple thrills of 1970s escapist TV, Austin was an astronaut who was rebuilt as a sort of bionic warrior in a tracksuit after much of him was mashed up in a devastating accident. Austin’s powers in the series included an incredibly strong right arm, a robot eye and the ability to run super super quick.

The concept was last seen onscreen in Bionic Woman with Michelle Ryan (Merlin) and Katee Sackhoff (Oculus), itself a new version of a spin off from the original male-dominated show. (It’s also worth mentioning Sandra Bullock’s involvement in 1989 entry Bionic Showdown. ) Ryan’s update drew decidedly »

Kevin Smith Reports Back From 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Set Visit

Writer-director Kevin Smith lived out a nerdy childhood fantasy last week, visiting the London set of J.J. AbramsStar Wars: Episode VII. (He even posted a teary-eyed Instagram selfie to prove how amazing the experience was.) As The Hollywood Reporter notes (via Slashfilm), Smith opened up about the visit during a recent Q&A at the Neuchatel International Film Festival in Switzerland, gushing about the old-school, "tactile" world Abrams has created.

Newcomers Join 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Cast & Kevin Smith Talks about His Visit to the Set

Director J.J. Abrams has added a pair of newcomers to the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII in UK-based American actress Crystal Clarke and British actor and parkour practitioner Pip Andersen (see his Spider-Man ad here), both from an open casting call in which over 37,000 showed up in 11 cities across the Us and UK. There is wo word on what parts Clarke or Anderson will play in the film, as production takes a two week hiatus, allowing time for Harrison Ford to recover from a broken leg for which he had surgery back in mid-June. However, what you should note from today's announcement, the studio again confirms production is on track for the planned December 18, 2015 release, despite the silly rumors speculating otherwise. That being said, just because filming isn't taking place now, it has been going on for some time now and Kevin Smith, whose become more of a roaming »

Tuesday Top Ten: Unconventional Fourth of July Movie Selections

1 July 2014 5:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here with this week's Tuesday Top Ten. Wikipedia tells this Australian that the Fourth of July, Independence Day, is a day usually celebrated with “fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and political speeches and ceremonies.” Curious that they don’t include movies since, at least since 1991 when James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day premiered to one of the then biggest opening weekends of all time, the big July 4th blockbuster is an annual trend with the likes of Independence Day, the Transformers franchise, Superman Returns and seemingly anything starring Will Smith.

With the holiday this Friday, most lists of movies to watch over the long holiday weekend will feature masculine, almost brutish titles that celebrate America’s achievements in war and rah-rah bravura (The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan, Top Gun) or the coming of age of a nation and its people in almost gooey fashion (Field of Dreams, »

A Dozen Awesome Movies That Celebrate What's Great About America

1 July 2014 10:31 AM, PDT | | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When it comes to America, the values, the principles, and ideals that we strive for are great. Freedom, liberty, truth, justice, happiness and the right stand up against tyranny are ideas that we can all believe in... but what about the stuff? The tangible things that distinguish this great nation from others are worth taking note of as well. That’s why we’re taking a moment, in honor of our great nation, to say “Thanks” to the movies that celebrate uniquely American cultural artifacts.

Hot Dogs — Father of the Bride

Bread has been around for tens of thousands of years and sausage too has been around for a couple millenia, but it was only in America that a hot dog could be created. And only an American comedy legend like Steve Martin could bring to the big screen the hot dog conundrum that has perplexed us all.

Barack Obama, John Singleton and the Academy toast 'Do the Right Thing'

28 June 2014 12:12 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Yes, another day, another anniversary. But this one is quite noteworthy. Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" turns 25 on Monday. It is a film I first saw when I was young, but I wasn't at all ready for it. I saw it again in film school and noticed I had grown with it, but it still whipped up complex feelings (as only the best films can). I've revisited it a number of times over the years and come to cherish it as one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever conjured, but the Academy frankly seemed like it was holding its nose just to give it the two nominations it received a quarter century ago. Kim Basinger had the right idea when the night of the Oscars came. "The best film of the year is not even nominated [for Best Picture] and it's 'Do the Right Thing,'" the "Batman" star said, »

Witness The Kevival: Costner Returns In ’3 Days To Kill’

26 June 2014 2:59 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

You’ve heard of the ‘McConaissance’. Well now another movie star considered past his best makes a high profile return to the big screen, as Kevin Costner toplines kinetic thriller 3 Days To Kill.

Though associated with a sequence of megabuck flops, Costner has been one of Hollywood’s true risk takers. It paid off in Oscars for Dances With Wolves (1990), where he did everything except sing the theme tune. Roles in hits such as The Bodyguard (1992) followed. But after Clint Eastwood’s A Perfect World (1993) came Waterworld. Throwing money at a sea-based knock-off of Mad Max was never going to set the box office alight, more give it a drenching. The Postman (1997) actually had Costner singing the theme tune and that failure appeared to round off his career as a big leading man. Yet the movies never forgot about Kev and in recent years he’s been rediscovered, with prestigious »
