Jerry Beck (portrayed by Don Johnson) is a real life LAPD Homicide detective who at the time had worked some 30 years in the department. He was seen on the television series COPS during this time with his long time partner Ray Verdugo, who has also has been seen in films such as Heat (1995) during the 90's.
Throughout the movie Bobby Burnes uses a Browning 9mm, When he tries to kidnap Beck in his car he again has the Browning. During the Shootout after Beck crashes his car into the police car to get away from Burnes, Burnes opens fire on him with a Berreta 92F 9mm.
A final scene between Don Johnson and Penelope Ann Miller was shot where her character picks up Beck at the closing press conference and there's a hint that the two may reconcile. This scene was cut from the released version.
Don Johnson was originally considered for his friend Bruce Willis's role in Die Hard and his other friend Kevin Costner's role in the untouchables but turned it down due to his commitment to miami vice. This and Harley Davidson and the marlboro man are the closest he came to appearing in movies like Die Hard and The untouchables.
