Storyline

This story takes place in a typical American neighborhood, when some new neighbors come to live in the house next to Ray Peterson. These new people are really strange; nobody has ever seen them, their house is a real mess, and during the night you can hear weird noises from their basement. The only thing they know is their name: Klopeks. One day Walter (an old man of the neighborhood) suddenly disappears and everyone starts to suspect the Klopeks... Trivia

Ray shows Carol the book on Satanic rituals, the theory being the Klopek's have taken Walter for Human sacrifice. Carol says to Ray: "I wouldn't have missed this for the world. A week (vacation) in Jonestown." A ghoulish reference to the Rev. Jim Jones and his religious cult The People's Temple. Rev. Jones moved his followers to South America. Tragedy struck when on November 18, 1978, Jim Jones and more than 900 members of his People's Temple committed mass suicide in the jungle of Guyana. Jim Jones had convinced his congregation that the end of the world was near. Most of the congregation voluntarily fed their children and themselves Flavor Aid laced with poison. 900 people lie dead in the sweltering heat of the jungles of Guyana. See more »

A movie you can relate to
12 December 2004 | by (New Hampshire) – See all my reviews

'The 'Burbs' is a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone. Tom Hanks does a great job at playing the role of an ordinary guy with ordinary problems. Every time I watch this movie, I can really feel like I am actually there. We all have weird neighbors and can relate to what Hanks is going through. It has also been a fantasy for many of us to try and find out exactly what our neighbors are up to, but we never have the guts to do it. Movies are made so that we can escape reality for a couple of hours and feel like we are doing things that we would most likely never get to do. This movie does it better than any other movie I have seen.

Most of the other people that I have talked to have agreed with me that 'The 'Burbs' is one of the most underrated comedies ever made. I don't believe that it was unsuccessful, but it definitely doesn't get the credit it deserves. If you want to see a movie that you can relate to, then watch this.
