Heavy D obituary

9 November 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Rapper whose career included hit singles and acting roles

The rapper Heavy D, who has died suddenly aged 44, after collapsing at his home, was among a handful of hip-hop stars from the 1980s who successfully established a lasting career. Having created a string of infectious, party-time hits with Heavy D & the Boyz, he was able to extend his reach into the commercial mainstream through collaborations with Bb King and Michael Jackson, and subsequently exhibited bankable skills as both a businessman and actor. Although he was past his commercial peak as a musician, his last album, Love Opus, released in September, showed that he had not entirely run out of creative juice.

He was born Dwight Arrington Myers in Mandeville, Jamaica, and his parents moved the family to Mount Vernon, New York, in 1971. His mother Eulahlee was a nurse and his father Clifford a technician. He began putting together his own »

Monster Brawl

Director/writer: Jesse T. Cook

Country: Canada

Running Time: 85 mins

Certificate: 18

Starring: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Kevin Nash, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean

The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Cook, revisits the genre in his latest film Monster Brawl. “The time will come when monsters shape the futures of all” begins a suitably jocular voice-over that introduces us to the “most highly-anticipated extreme sport ever”. Making a horror enthusiast's hypothetical pub chat a reality, Cook pits some of the genre's most celebrated figures against each other in the wrestling ring.

Eight of the most powerful ghouls of all time from all four corners of the earth come together and are structured into “two conferences” with middle and heavy weight “monsters” and “creatures”, such as “Witch Bitch”. An American TV show set-up is quickly established with presenter, Buzz Chambers hosting from a secret cemetery location. »

7 Part TV Scare-athon: Because Halloween Isn’t Just for Cinephiles

26 October 2011 11:00 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It’s that time of year again- Halloween; ‘tis the season for ghouls and ghasts and spooks galore. There have been few true horror series, such as Tales from the Crypt and Masters of Horror, and for this admitted scaredy-cat, finding TV episodes to watch can be tough. Here are seven fun and spooky episodes to celebrate the holiday with, marathon-style. As a rule, Halloween-set episodes are excluded, as that’s a list for a different day, however, no Halloween TV marathon would be complete without It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” (the first incarnation is a favorite, with the gang moving into a haunted house, the introduction of Kang and Kodos as The Simpsons does “To Serve Man”, and finally their fantastic rendition of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven); consider adding them to the ordered list below.

The CW Developing a New Series - Dare

18 October 2011 6:56 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The CW television network is on the move to attract more youth-oriented viewers once again, developing a new series from Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin and "Veronica Mars" executive producer Jennifer Gwartz entitled "Dare". Easy A writer Bert V. Royal is attached to pen the hour-long action-thriller from Lin Pictures and Warner Bros. Television.

Per THR the story revolves around a group of five twentysomethings who are forced to play a deadly game of Truth or Dare while trying to discover who is behind the game and how to stop it.

The deal continues Lin's relationship with Warner Bros. Television, where he has an overall deal. Last year he developed "Poe", a supernatural period crime procedural exploring how Edgar Allan Poe's most famous stories came to be. ABC produced the pilot but ultimately passed on the drama in May. As for Gwartz, her credits lend themselves well to the action-drama: »

31 Days Of Horror For October - Day 17: Graveyard Shift (1990)

17 October 2011 10:04 PM, PDT | MoreHorror | See recent MoreHorror news »

Spur of the moment change to the 31 Days line up (due to unforseen circumstances) and I decided to grab this little Stephen King number. This is one of the few adaptations I haven’t seen, and a couple of friends of mine like to go on and on about it. I had no idea what this was about or what to expect. You know what? I had a blast!

This number is based on a Stephen King short story, and you can tell. Something like this is more suited to say Tales From The Crypt or Masters Of Horror, but screenwriter John Esposito and director Ralph Singleton kept it short and managed to lay on enough meat to make it work. This is how you expand upon a short story successfully and keeping it the right length to avoid it getting drawn out.

This is from Stephen King so where »

Shedding the Exoskeleton: An Interview with Terrance Zdunich

To afficianados of midnight movies across the world, Terrance Zdunich is a tall, imposing figure with multicolored dreadlocks, goth corpsepaint on his face, and a low singing voice that sends chills down the spines of even the most straight-laced audience members.

He is renowned for being the co-creator and star of the sensational cult film “Repo! The Genetic Opera”, which despite a soft opening in 2008 has become a global phenomenon resulting in cosplay competitions, midnight screenings, shadowcasts, and a plethora of people who now look at Paris Hilton in a whole new way. In “Repo!”, Terrance plays the beloved narrator Graverobber, who serves as a sort of Greek muse to the production, tying scenes together with biting wit and wry third-party observations. He is perhaps the most recognizable and celebrated character of the film, and as such Terrance is a frequent guest at shadowcast performances, Q&As, panels, and convention room floors. »

Have a Look at the Upcoming Horror Series Night Terrors

14 October 2011 6:10 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Filmmakers David Buchert and Chris St.Croix have an obvious love of “Tales from the Crypt” and “Tales from the Darkside”-style anthology programs, as evidenced in the effective new trailer for their upcoming series “Night Terrors”. The two completed episodes — namely, Chris St. Croix’s “The Keeper” and David Buchert’s “Dummy” — certainly look promising, and should be released in an as-of-yet undetermined format in the next few months. I’m guessing this will be some sort of web series, which, of course, would be extremely cool. We’ll keep you posted as more information on the project becomes available. Swing by the official YouTube page to stay to-up-date. Expect “The Keeper” to hit in November, while “Dummy” takes a stab in December »

New Release: Chillerama DVD and Blu-ray

Release Date: Nov. 29, 2011

Price: DVD $27.97, Blu-ray $29.97

Studio: Image Entertainment

The 2011 horror anthology film Chillerama features four short movies by genre filmmakers Adam Rifkin (The Dark Backward), Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), Adam Green (Frozen) and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2).

In the spirit of such classic “omnibus” films as Dead of Night, Tales From the Crypt and Creepshow, Chillerama offers four vignettes that celebrate the golden age of B horror schlock.

Chillerama’s wraparound story involves the closing night of the last drive-in theater in America. The theater’s owner (Richard Riehle, Bridesmaids) “celebrates” the closing by scheduling the ultimate marathon of lost horror films — four of them — to be shown publicly for the first time. The quartet includes “The Diary of Anne Frankenstein” directed by Green, “Wadzilla,” directed by Rifkin, “I Was a Teenage Werebear”  helmed by Sullivan and “Zom-b-Movie” by Lynch.

There’s a new anthology in town, and its name is “Night Terrors”. No, not this “Night Terrors,” but a completely different horror series by David Buchert and Chris St. Croix. The red band-style trailer for the horror anthology, has been released, featuring stories “The Keeper” written and directed by St. Croix and “Dummy” written and directed by Buchert. While the anthology finds its inspiration from the old-school “Tales From the Crypt” series, the scares have been ramped up to scare today’s contemporary audiences.
