Storyline

The Simpsons is an animated sitcom about the antics of a dysfunctional family called the Simpsons (surprise surprise). Homer is the oafish unhealthy beer loving father, Marge is the hardworking homemaker wife, Bart is the ten year old underachiever (and proud of it), Lisa is the unappreciated eight year old genius, and Maggie is the cute, pacifier loving silent infant. Trivia

Every speaking member of the Simpson family except for Homer is fluent in French. Marge speaks and tutors French in The Simpsons: The Way We Was (1991), Bart becomes fluent after his time as an exchange student in France in The Simpsons: The Crepes of Wrath (1990), and Lisa is revealed to be fully fluent in The Simpsons: Paths of Glory (2015). Goofs

Waylon Smithers was designed to be "Mister Burns' white sycophant," as it "would be a bad idea to have a black subservient character" putting up with the abuse that Burns doles out. (Quotes are from David Silverman, one of the show's main producers.) Ironically, Smithers is colored as an African-American in his first appearance The Simpsons: Homer's Odyssey, due to color stylist Gyorgyi Peluce's misinterpretation of the new character. The mistake was quickly caught and corrected starting with the immediate next episode The Simpsons: There's No Disgrace Like Home. See more »

Mr. Burns: [Giving a talk to inspire the school] Okay, I'm going to keep this short. Friends, family, religion. These are the demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in business. Any questions?

Crazy Credits

In the episode "The Old Man and the Key" the closing credits are a parody of the ending of The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), with the Simpsons standing in front of a doorway waving at the audience, while banjo music plays. When the Gracie Films logo appears, Lisa is heard saying, in a hillbilly accent, "This has been a Gracie Films Presentation, y'all". See more »

Pure genius
17 January 1999 | by (L.A. CA) – See all my reviews

The Simpsons is a show that has sustained ten years of constant humor. The stories have gradually become better and the second fiddle characters were getting more screen time which translates into a much more realized show. The pop culture references abound and delight those who can pick them out. My personal favorite is the Citizen Kane references in the episode called "Rosebud." Plus, anything with C. Montgomery Burns is hysterical. The guest stars aren't there as a "special appearance" touted by the networks. They actually work into the storyline, and that makes it all the more enjoyable. Where else can you see The Moody Blues acting like thugs in a Vegas casino?
