Zoe's divorce is finalised and Alec sees it as a cause for celebration, turning up at her flat with champagne. She sees things differently, leading to a row though they reconcile and spend the night together. Next day Miles tells Alec that his wife has run off with another man and he intends to take time off to try and win her back again.
Jamie comes to work for his father as Miles pursues his errant wife. Alec agrees to have a proper meeting with Zoe's parents, minus his donkey's head, and though they are initially suspicious of his motives the parents get on famously with Alec, being of the same age group and having similar teen-age memories - so much so that Zoe feels rather left out. Afterwards Zoe and Alec dance to his old 1950s records and once again agree that they must counter the age group as best as they can.
Alec gives Zoe driving lessons as her birthday approaches but it puts a strain on their relationship. Hilary is intrigued by Miss Flood having phone conversations with a mystery man and when the manuscript of a romantic novel penned by one Elvira Storm arrives at the office it would seem that Miss Flood is the author. Zoe is expecting Alec may be giving her a car for her birthday but instead he pays for her to have driving lessons.
Somewhat exhausted by his relationship with a much younger woman - and also, following a misunderstanding, suspecting Miss flood of being a drug dealer - Alec seems to be seeing less and less of Zoe and so,as a remedy, she suggests that they move in together . Jamie and his girlfriend have the same idea and the strait-laced Simone is shocked by her father's decision.
Alec is unsure as to whether to take up Zoe's suggestion and move in with her. Not only is this his first relationship since his widowhood but her flat is much smaller than his house. Jamie is all for it but Simone is,unsurprisingly, disapproving. Meanwhile Hilary rows with her boyfriend and ends up as Miss Flood's lodger.
Matt, a handsome young American teacher, comes to work at Zoe's school and they spend a lot of time together working on the school play. This makes Alec jealous so that, when his old flame Dollie, reappears in town,he is only too happy to flirt with her to make Zoe jealous. However this fails to work as Zoe's relationship with Matt is only a working one.
Valentine's day is approaching but Alec and Zoe have split up. Each blames the other but they are both miserable, neither wanting to be seen to give in first and ask for reconciliation. Thus Hilary takes the matter in hand, only to be sacked by Alec for interfering. However he and Zoe do get back together and Hilary is reinstated.
