New Who Review: “Nightmare in Silver”

Not since Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park has the an amusement park been made the center of a thriller so perfectly.  The return (and re-threatening) of a classic villain, a heck of a guest cast and a script by Neil Gaiman.  Seems like a dream, but mix it all together and it’s a…

Willow at the ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’ Midnight Series this Weekend

12 May 2013 8:06 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Though Willow (1988) was one of director Ron Howard’s few box-office disappointments, it definitely deserves a second look and you’ll have the opportunity to do so this weekend (May 17th and 18th) when it plays at midnight Friday and Saturday at the Tivoli as part of the Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

At once an epic celebration and a gentle spoof of the sword-and-sorcery genre, Willow was a collaborative effort between Howard and George Lucas and the pair threw an eclectic bunch of elements is thrown into the stewing pot – much like what Lucas did with Star Wars. Val Kilmer as the hero looks like Conan the Barbarian but acts like a clumsy Han Solo; the chief Villainess looks like a real-life version of the evil queen in Disney’s Snow White; the chief baddy looks like Darth Vader. Willow is well, a Hobbit.

There are even some fairies like Tinkerbell. »

Doctor Who Series Blog 7.12: Nightmare In Silver (Contains Spoilers)

11 May 2013 12:06 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Written By: Neil Gaiman

Directed By: Stephen Woolfenden

The Story: The Doctor takes Clara, Angie & Artie to Hedgewick’s World of Wonders: the perfect theme park day out, only to find himself in a deadly battle against an army of Cybermen and himself!

The Verdict: Superstar author Neil Gaiman takes his second stab at Doctor Who this week, after his perfect debut back in 2011 with The Doctor’S Wife, and this time he’s been given some bigger toys to play with – the Cybermen! It’s a match made in heaven, and Gaiman wastes no time in having some nasty fun with the classic foes, upgrading them into the perfect unstoppable and emotionless killers, a role they’ve not quite been since their return to Who in 2006.

Sadly though, Nightmare In Silver isn’t the perfect episode it should be. Too many dark elements are played for laughs, negating much of the threat level. »

'Life's Too Short' series finale special premieres July 5 on HBO

6 May 2013 3:15 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Life's Too Short" will end its short run July 5 on HBO.

The comedy series stars Warwick Davis (who played Professor Flitwick in the "Harry Potter" films) as a mockumentary version of himself and was created by "The Office" masterminds Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

It's a co-production between HBO and the BBC, but failed to achieve the acclaim or popularity of other Gervais/Merchant collaborations including "Extras" and animated podcast "The Ricky Gervais Show."

After the first season of seven episodes, Gervais initially indicated the show would move forward with Season 2. But HBO announced in January that "Life's Too Short" would end with a single finale special to provide storyline closure.

The hour-long special -- featuring a guest appearance by Davis' "Willow" co-star Val Kilmer -- already aired in the U.K. on March 30. »

HBO Announces Air Date for Finale of Ricky Gervais' 'Life's Too Short'

6 May 2013 11:18 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's "Life's Too Short," their mockumentary series chronicling the struggles of actor Warwick Davis, playing himself, wrapped its run on the BBC in March with a special episode. Stateside, you'll be able to see the conclusion of the series when it airs on HBO on Friday, July 5th. The seven-episode first season of "Life's Too Short" debuted on HBO last February, and followed the "Harry Potter" actor as he tried to jump start his fading career as Britain's "go-to little person" actor, often to humiliating ends. Written by and featuring Gervais and Merchant, the series typically also showcased a corral of celebrity cameos, including Johnny Depp, Liam Neeson, Sting, Helena Bonham Carter and Steve Carell. The finale will add Davis' "Willow" co-star Val Kilmer to that list, who brings Davis the hopeful news that they'll soon be in production on a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film. »

Life's Too Short Special to Wrap Up the Comedy Series on July 5

6 May 2013 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

From Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, "Life's Too Short Special" will wrap up the story of actor Warwick Davis, a little person trying to hustle his way back into the spotlight, when it debuts Friday, July 5, exclusively on HBO. Davis reprises his role as a fictionalized version of himself in the follow-up to the HBO comedy series. After a long cold spell, things are looking up for the self-aggrandizing Davis, who once appeared in some of Hollywood's biggest hits (the "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars" films). He's living with his new girlfriend, Amy, and is elated to learn from fellow "Willow" star Val Kilmer that a sequel to that 1988 fantasy may be in the works - if Davis can help raise funds to finance the film. They Don't Make Many Fantasies Like "Willow" Anymore

4 May 2013 12:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

There aren't enough leading roles for little people in Hollywood, but if any one filmmaker has a history of giving them parts, it's George Lucas. After casting Warwick Davis as Wicket, the ewok that befriended Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi, Lucas set about to make a movie that would cast him front and center, and alas, five years later, the fantasy adventure Willow debuted in cinemas. With Warwick starring as an aspiring wizard alongside a funny, manic Val Kilmer, Willow had Lucas's ambitious story Lucas and Ron Howard in the Director's chair. The end product is an incredibly memorable fantasy adventure, if nothing else.

Ilm Creative Director Says Special Effects Aren't Special Anymore

9 April 2013 4:15 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Dennis Muren may not be a household name (unless you live in a household where movie special effects are treated like a religion), but odds are high that you’ve seen his work. Muren has been a member of George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic for years and has worked on a huge range of films, including Jurassic Park and Willow. When a guy with Muren’s resume speaks about the state of his craft, we should all be listening. And that’s what the creative director at Ilm did recently, making the debate-inspiring statement that “In some ways, I think special effects aren’t special anymore.” Before you dash to the comment section to voice your opinion, allow Mr. Muren to clarify. A casual reading of that statement might make you believe that...

Fun Finds: Val Kilmer Reprises Role as Batman

8 April 2013 2:02 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

It's been a while since Val Kilmer wore the Batman cowl (18 years to be exact), but the actor who stars in a number of films opening in theaters this year including Disney's Planes was a good sport poking fun at himself on Warwick Davis' show Life's Too Short. Kilmer and Davis starred in the '80s cult classic Willow and it's nice to see the old co-stars still on good terms. In the skit, Kilmer stops by Davis' office and introduces himself to Davis' secretary wearing the Batman cowl. Davis then asks his secretary if she knows who is behind the mask. Completely clueless, the secretary names every Batman actor except for Kilmer, much to Davis' growing frustration. Also, if you haven't had a chance to read and watch today's Batman post over...

First Trailer for Ron Howard's F1 Movie 'Rush' with Chris Hemsworth

StudioCanal has unveiled the very first full trailer for Ron Howard's Rush, the Formula One racing film about two real-life rival drivers, one played by Daniel Brühl (Niki Lauda) the other played by Chris Hemsworth (James Hunt). We've been following this film since early behind-the-scenes footage and photos showed up last year, but now we get to watch some actual finished footage and it looks outstanding. Not only an intense story about F1 racing, but a complex story about these drivers and what drives them. Most of the dialogue in this gave me chills. Looks so damn good! Watch George Lucas's Early Experimental Short Films

2 April 2013 2:50 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Long before Star Wars, George Lucas was an everyday film student at the University of Southern California, toiling away on graphics and animation courses and completing his first student film, titled Look at Life. The short once was showcased on the documentary Empire of Dreams. Part of it is shown in the Vimeo clip above, shared via CinephileArchive. Life is an abstract montage of black-and-white images that reflect some of the political tensions of the time. (Lucas enrolled in film school in the mid-1960s, a politically charged era that no doubt would have colored his storytelling methods.) But the site has an additional find, one that might interest Lucas aficionados. Apparently the writer-director worked on 1:42.08, a short film with race car driver Peter Brock that has multiple visual cues to Lucas. later films. Lucas shot the short at the Willow Spring Raceway in California, and it.s drenched »

Game Of Thrones' Hound on bumfluff, hugs and the magic of Wilko Johnson

29 March 2013 5:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Rory McCann has done his fair share of cleaving as Sandor Clegane. But, like his fanfic-inspiring antihero in Westeros, this Scots actor is a soulful sort of fellow

By his own admission, Rory McCann is a big man, and he's struggling to adjust to the heat of Santa Monica. The towering Scot who plays Sandor "the Hound" Clegane – foremost sword-swinging badass in a series not lacking on that front – is in La for a Game Of Thrones premiere and goblet-clanging celebratory shindig, along with 23 other stars from the show. "So about 20% of the cast," he chuckles.

The ever-expanding character list of HBO's blood-spattered epic has become a running joke: season three adds Diana Rigg, Paul Kaye, Mackenzie Crook and more to the pool of Britain's GoT talent. But in Westeros, the medieval-ish land of fleshpot diplomacy and lethal realpolitik described in George Rr Martin's fantasy doorstops, there's a high degree of natural wastage. »

'Life's Too Short' Warwick Davis: Ricky Gervais is a national treasure

28 March 2013 4:31 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Warwick Davis has hit back at Ricky Gervais's critics, describing his Life's Too Short co-star as a "national treasure" and "genius".

Davis reprises his lead role in Gervais and Stephen Merchant's BBC sitcom for an Easter special this weekend and the Willow star claimed that he was frustrated by the constant knocking of Gervais in the press.

"We should value people like Ricky. He's a national treasure and a brilliant man. It's a strong word, but he's a genius," said Davis.

"Over the years he has created amazing, original comedy. I'm watching Derek at the moment and it's a hell of a show. I've never laughed tears and then cried tears of emotion one moment later with a TV programme.

"Ricky and Stephen have an amazing way of working with actors and we should be celebrating people's success. We're not good at that in this country.

Review: Willow

27 March 2013 10:04 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Sometimes you are born for a life of adventure and sometimes adventure recruits you into its cause. For George Lucas, the latter approach is preferable as witnessed in Luke Skywalker in Star Wars and Willow Ufgood in Willow. While Skywalker unknowingly had it in his blood, Willow was far more the ordinary person thrust into an extraordinary cause.

Lucas conceived of Willow’s tale back in 1972 and kept it rattling around his mind until technology was sophisticated enough to tackle it on film. Casting Warwick Davis as Wicket in Return of the Jedi probably began the move from backburner to the front of the production slate even though it was another five years before the film began production. By then, Lucas was no longer interested in directing, instead choosing Ron Howard to mount his first major fantasy. By then, Howard, who was a directing contemporary of Lucas although they traveled in different circles, »
