Better than expected, 30 July 2006
Author: jlon from Dublin

There were only 18 Irish feature films made in the 1980s. DVD review.

A lone wolf (Brosnan) refuses to leave his home town in Wicklow. He gets involved with the resistance to a chemical plant.

Strange movie that isn't very good but is quite watchable. There's a good cast (Stanford especially), the conflict between the ordinary Irish and the business-class, actress Doody (who has only appeared in a handful of movies since), the funny way all the well-dressed rich characters are crooked, Brosnan (looking great), and loads of Irish character actors (even Twink appears as a tacky slapper wearing a mohawk and leather jacket). Like a lot of Irish movies this one is more suited to television drama than the cinema. The best scene was the final killing on the beach - like something from the far superior Get Carter.

Taffin is worth a look but is difficult to get on DVD.
