An inspiration on how a person from ordinary roots with native
intelligence, can overcome education and background obstacles to rise to
any height. Also a perfect summation of the false and the superficial
in the eighties Thatcher era, when 'Service' was the new economy
instead of manufacturing. Irony when the hero, who exploits the
idiocies of class and snobbery to rise above them, is showing a coach
full of Japanese around...but that spoils the story.
There are multiple sub-plots to savour, a bitter friend who fails where
Gary succeeds and turns up later to poke barbs at his venality in
swimming in that sea. The decadence of the girlfriend from the upper
classes who uses him, then is used in turn.
I would dearly like to get hold of the original or a decent resolution
file of this play, to treasure and whenever feeling fed up, play again.
