Bluray/DVD Review: Sleepaway Camp III

16 June 2015 12:12 PM, PDT | | See recent Icons of Fright news »

One of the things that I love most about being a horror writer and a longtime rabid 80s horror nut is getting the opportunity to meet other fans like myself and talk about the films that we sat through as kids for the first time and how we have grown to become so attached to them as adults so many years later. While established franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street have their own masses of followers, it warms my heart when I meet a fan of the Sleepaway Camp series and get the opportunity to banter back and forth with them and discuss what we both love and hate about the original trilogy. Surprisingly, there is a sort of divide among fans about which sequel they prefer most – Unhappy Campers or Teenage Wasteland. It’s fascinating to get to hear them speak so passionately about »

Blu-ray Reviews: Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers & Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland

The Sleepaway Camp series has been a longtime favorite of mine, as I’ve always found Angela Baker to be one of the more fascinating villains and cinematic serial killers the genre has ever seen. When we first meet her in the original Sleepaway Camp, she’s a precocious pre-teen (portrayed by Felissa Rose) who has endured one messed up childhood. By the time we are reunited with an adult Angela (Pamela Springsteen) for the next two sequels, she’s embraced her complicated nature through the "help" of some professionals and has evolved into the perfect camp counselor.

Far more decisively comedic in tone than their predecessor, both Sleepaway Camp II and III are a ridiculous amount of fun for anyone who grew up on a steady diet of slasher movies. They do a fantastic job of fully embracing and celebrating everything great that was happening in the horror genre at that time. »

With today being Friday the 13th, many horror hounds have Camp Crystal Lake killer Jason Voorhees on the mind, but the thought of summer camp slashers might also lead a good portion of fright film fans to think about Angela Baker from the Sleepaway Camp movies.

Following their release of the Sleepaway Camp Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVD last May, this summer Scream Factory will release Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVDs of both Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland.
