Many of the European distributors for the film tried to sell the film as a buddy comedy, similar to the highly successful Lethal Weapon (1987). In fact, one ad for Italy described the film as "This year's Lethal Weapon (1987)!".
The film was originally planned to have a large Christmas opening in theaters, but Kings Road decided to do more editing after disastrous first studio screening. This caused the film to miss its release date.
Because the crew was Italian mostly, they knew the movie was going to be dubbed in different languages. As such, they were not careful about being quiet, which had gotten Burt Reynolds very upset during filming.
The movie got Razzie nominated for two Worst Acting awards, for Worst Actor - Burt Reynolds (for this film and Switching Channels (1988)) as well as Worst Actress - Liza Minnelli (for her work in this movie and Arthur (1981)). Reynolds lost, but Minelli won.
