According to Matthew Modine, he was depressed during the making of this film due to his rough experience while making Full Metal Jacket (1987).
There were so many scenes that didn't make it into the movie that Jonathan Demme decided to place them at the end during the credits to sort of retell the story.
Mark R. Burns got the idea to write a mob movie when he was ten years old and a house in his suburban Long Island neighborhood was raided and the father was discovered to have been in the mob.
The filmmakers' did six rewrites in order to convince Tom Cruise to play the part of Mike. Cruise opted for Cocktail (1988) instead.
This film features four actors who would later have roles in another Jonathan Demme-directed film, The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Charles Napier, who plays Angela's hairdresser, would later play Lt. Boyle in "Silence"; Paul Lazar, who plays Tommy, would play Pilcher (the entomologist); Chris Isaak, who plays the Clown, would play the SWAT Commander; and Tracey Walter, who plays Mr. Chicken Lickin', would play Lamar.
Dean Stockwell stayed in character the entire time during shooting.
The apartment complex where Angela moves to in New York is the same complex used in Child's Play (1988).
Matthew Modine initially didn't think that there was anything funny about the script.

In the beginning of the movie when the train comes into the station and the commuters get on to go to New York City, the train they get on is actually going in the opposite direction, towards the beach.

According to the commentary track of their compilation video Direct from Brooklyn (1999), the video for "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" by alternative rock band They Might Be Giants was shot using this movie's tails and unused film.
