House Rules had political intrigue in Victorian politics
I enjoyed watching House Rules when it was on the ABC all those years ago, and for people who love their politics, it was very engaging. Jackie Weaver gave an impressive performance as the MP who got elected unopposed to the Legislative Assembly (in Victoria) after the sitting member forgot to lodge his nomination papers by the deadline.
Legendary actor Bud Tingwell played the MP who was held responsible by his party for forgetting to get the nomination papers lodged, but what was fascinating was the final episode.
In the final episode Weaver's character stood against William Zappa's character, a party stalwart in the seat, in what was expected to be a close election. Weaver's character won by one vote! And guess who voted for her? Bud's character, as I guess he was won over by her.
House Rules was ahead of its time and I wish the ABC would reboot it.
