On 9th of November 1983 two Australians, Kevin Barlow and Geoff Chambers were arrested at Penang Airport in Malaysia carrying 179 grams of Heroin. A crime which in Malaysia carries a mandatory sentence of death... Dadah Is Death (A Long Way From Home) is the true story of Barbara Barlow's desperate attempt to save her son from the Hangmans rope - a courageous effort that involved impassioned pleas to President Reagan, The British Prime Minister, and even the Pope. By July 1986 this international struggle had seemed to reach a hopeless conclusion and all that was left was a mother's love for her son. Written by
I first saw 'Dadah Is Death' late one night back in 1994 (It's first, and only airing on UK T.V to date). It was shown as a two-part mini series both 90 mins long and was on BBC1. I happened upon this file by sheer luck. I'd just watched an episode of 'Prisoner - Cell Block H' on ITV1, and flicked over the channel to see if anything else was on.
Well, what can I say, I was hooked by this film, and couldn't wait until the next week to see the second part.
Sure enough the 2nd part was just as good, and right up until last week I have being desperately trying to find a copy on VHS.
This mini series made it to video in the U.K, but only had one short release in 1990 on the Braveworld label. I can tell you that it is very very rare to find a copy anywhere now! It's a shame that so many excellent 'made for TV' movies only get shown once on T.V then get forgotten about. Especially true stories like this one!
Fantastic stuff 10/10
