The man who brought Chucky to life has died

28 July 2015 11:46 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

N. Brock Winkless IV, the puppeteer who brought Chucky to life in a total of four "Child's Play" films, has died at the age of 56. According to MakeupMag.com, Winkless suffered from a "debilitating neurological condition that caused him rising levels of discomfort and lack of muscular control for more than 15 years. He died as the result of complications due to that condition." Though he wasn't well-known outside the horror and special effects communities, Winkless helped bring a number of well-known characters to life, from Chucky to the Cryptkeeper to Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." MakeupMag notes that he particularly excelled at syncing up a puppet's "mouth and jaw movements" in order to make their "delivery" of dialogue appear more realistic. His other credits included "Alien 3," "Death Becomes Her," "Casper," "Congo" and "The X Files, and his most frequent collaborator was special makeup effects designer Kevin Yagher, »

'Kids': The Oral History of the Most Controversial Film of the Nineties

16 July 2015 10:29 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

It was the summer of 1995. Bill Clinton was president, Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York, and Oj Simpson was on trial. That summer’s youth-oriented movies included Pixar's first movie Toy Story, the Disney musical Pocahontas — and Kids, in which wayward, stoned teens fuck each other senseless and head-stomp random strangers.

It might be hard to remember just how notorious Larry Clark's indie-skater odysey was. The movie grossed a modest $7 million at the box office that summer — a wild success when you account for the fact that it »

Drive-In Dust Offs: The Beast Within

25 April 2015 11:48 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.

Released in February by United Artists, the film took in a total of 7.7 million at the box office. Those were not great numbers, and the reviews were worse. Mainstream critics in general have never been kind to horror; almost »

Top 12 really creepy ballet moments in film and TV

23 February 2015 9:40 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ballet adds a surreal, creepy quality to many films and tv shows. Here are 12 of the most unsettling...

Warning - This article contains spoilers for The Cabin In The Woods, The Twilight Zone, Black Swan and The Red Shoes.

Ballet is not natural. Dancers perform exhausting routines with legs and feet turned out to bizarre angles, arms held just to the point where they really start to hurt (that’s when you know you’re doing it right), backs bending to angles of 90° and more, limbs held stock still while balancing on their toes, in bodies mathematically maintained in a state that contains absolutely not an ounce of fat but can sustain two or three hours of jumping and running around.

And then the female dancers add to all this by putting their entire weight on the points of their toes, feet bruising and bleeding, nails cracking, and the male »

8 January 2015 8:13 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Upcoming co-op hunt 'em up, Evolve, has gone gold, and here's a new trailer to celebrate, along with some facial hair...

Evolve is one of the most anticipated titles of the year, and has been a long time coming. Taking the Left 4 Dead mould, but throwing in a dangerous, evolving monster instead of the undead, it's set to be a new twist on the co-op Fps, and one that we're very keen to get our hands on. This won't be too long now, as Turtle Rock and 2K have announced the game has gone gold, so will hit the February 10 release date with no problems.

You can see the new cinematic trailer below, which gives us a good idea what to expect when we're out hunting dangerous beasties, and the kinds of impressive tech we'll get to use.

As well as announcing the game's completion, Turtle Rock also made good on its charity promise. »
