‘Spider-Man Homecoming’: How Jon Watts Channeled John Hughes

14 July 2017 2:06 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When director Jon Watts (“Cop Car”) met with Marvel for the first time about “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” they told him to infuse the reboot with an ’80s John Hughes high school rite of passage focus. Watts was already there: “Pretty in Pink,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” were his touchstones.

“Those were the movies we grew up on,” Watts said. “I remember that age and you’re just constantly screwing up. You don’t know what to do yet,  and you don’t know where you fit into the world.”

Capturing the Hughes Vibe

With the decidedly younger Tom Holland making his rough-and-tumble Spidey debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” Watts had a valuable head start with “Homecoming.” This brainy teenage version of the superhero finds himself way in over his head, ditching class, canceling dates, and fumbling his way as a crime fighter. It truly was like channeling the late Hughes. »

The Best Movies About the Afterlife — IndieWire Critics Survey

10 July 2017 11:05 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In honor of David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story,” what is the best movie about the afterlife?

Kate Erbland (@katerbland), IndieWire

It will come as no surprise to anyone that, as a child, I watched a lot of television. A lot. I was mostly obsessed with HBO — our single movie channel, number 2 on the dial; yes, my childhood TV had a dial, don’t ask — with intermittent deviations into mostly inappropriate mini-series (thus explaining my rarely disclosed expertise on “The Thornbirds”), and was pretty much given free range to watch whatever the hell I wanted, whenever I wanted. This is why my favorite »

Alec Baldwin has been dominating pop culture headlines for the last year thanks to his trumped up impression of America's current Commander-in-chief. On Sunday, the laughs came at the star's expense, as friends and former co-stars roasted the 59-year-old actor in the Spike TV special One Night Only: Alec Baldwin. Taped on stage last month at New York City's Apollo Theater, the show didn't have quite the same bite as the famed Comedy Central roasts. But there were a few notable burns from those in attendance, including Robert De Niro, »

Michael Keaton confirms Tim Burton reunion on Dumbo

2 July 2017 2:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in April it was reported that actor Michael Keaton could be set for a reunion with director Tim Burton, albeit on Disney’s live-action Dumbo remake, as opposed to the long-rumoured Beetlejuice sequel.

Well, speaking to Good Morning America to promote the release of his new film Spider-Man: Homecoming, Keaton has confirmed that he is set to play the villain in the new take on the Disney classic.

“I am reuniting with Tim Burton,” said Keaton. “You just want to be around that guy. You want to be in his sphere because he’s original and unique and an artist.”

Keaton and Burton first collaborated in 1988 on Beetlejuice, and followed it up with 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns.

Dumbo will also see Keaton reuniting with his Batman Returns co-star Danny DeVito, while Burton regular Eva Green (Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) is also attached »

Michael Keaton to go bad again for live-action Dumbo remake, reuniting him with Tim Burton

30 June 2017 4:55 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Scott Davis

The last few years have seen a huge renaissance in the career of Michael Keaton, who seems to be everywhere at the moment. The actor, best known for his performances as Batman in Tim Burton’s two films as well as Beetlejuice, is about the turn to the dark side with the imminant release of Spider-Man: Homecoming but he is set to stay there for his next project.

Speaking on Good Morning America this week whilst promoting Marvel and Sony’s latest incarnation of the legendary webslinger, played by Tom Holland, Keaton confirmed that he is to reunite with Burton for his live-action remake of Disney animated classic Dumbo. While he didn’t confirm the character he is playing, it’s reported he will play Vandemere, the man who acquires the circus for which Dumbo and his mother are part of.

30 Reasons You Shouldn't Apologize For Having a Crush on Alec Baldwin

20 June 2017 5:50 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Why do you think the characters in Clueless called hot guys "Baldwins"? Back in the '80s and '90s, Alec and his brothers were the equivalent of today's Hemsworths when it came to serving up sexiness as a family. But Alec . . . oh, Alec. That strong jaw. The dark hair. Those piercing blue eyes that could just cut right through you. On shows like Knots Landing and films like Malice, The Hunt For Red October, Glengarry Glen Ross, and even Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin was it. I refuse to sit here and pretend that he doesn't give off "daddy" vibes and that I don't still find him attractive (when he's not dressed up as Donald Trump or voicing a cartoon baby) - because, yes, his hair may be a shimmery shade of gray now, but those baby blues can still stare right into your soul. Beetlejuice Bar Reviews Sounds Like the Best Kind of Nightmare

Reviews are starting to come in for the Beetlejuice bar in Los Angeles, and it's basically like eating dinner and drinking with a jerk, which is pretty much how a normal bar works, right? The Beetle House pop-up bar first opened in New York last year, and the Los Angeles location just opened a few weeks ago. Zach Neil built the bar and decorated it with antiques, vintage chandeliers, shrunken heads, and way too many oddities to list here to make it as an authentic Beetlejuice/Tim Burton experience as possible. Beetle House even has an interactive version of the miniature town where Beetlejuice lives and of course an actor (who is not Michaael Keaton) portraying Beetljuice greeting and interacting with customers.

The Beetle House has barely been open for two weeks and it is seeing large crowds that want to come in and experience Beetljuice firsthand and possibly eat »

Nine Actors Who Reinvented Themselves and Revitalized Their Careers

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.

Liam Neeson-  Neeson has had a long career, and the early part of it was in dramatic roles. An intense dramatic actor, he apeared in films like The Dead Pool, Dark Man, Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Miserables. His career rebirth came after playing Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars-Episode one: The Phantom Menace. After that, he got more offers for actions parts and recreated himself as an action hero in films like Gangs of NY, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, the A-Team, Unknown, the Grey, Taken 2, »
