93 movie remakes and reboots currently in the works

19 August 2015 2:05 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...

Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.

Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Akira

One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film, »

20th Century Fox rebooting Alien Nation

27 March 2015 12:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that 20th Century Fox is planning a reboot of the 1988 sci-fi film Alien Nation, with Iron Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway signing on to develop the script.

Alien Nation starred Mandy Patinkin as the first alien police officer, who found himself partnered up with a reluctant, racially insensitive veteran detective, played by James Caan. The movie went on to spawn a TV series, along with five made-for-tv movies and a selection of comic books and novels.

Plot details for the reboot are being kept under wraps, but it is said that the movie will explore how and why the alien race came to Earth, with Fox envisioning it as the first chapter of a franchise.

Alien Nation remake planned, Iron Man writers on board

26 March 2015 11:53 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The 1980s sci-fi movie Alien Nation looks like it's next to get the remake treatment...

The plans to bring Alien Nation back to the screen we thought had died a quiet death. The Sci-Fi Channel, as it was then known, was considering a reboot back in 2009, but since then, we've heard barely a whisper.

Given that everything else seems to have been remade and/or rebooted, that's something of a surprise. Not least because there are themes in the original movie and subsequent TV show that have hardly lost their relevance.

Perhaps that's why the remake is now back on, although it seems to be a cinema project this time around. 20th Century Fox has hired a pair of writers to come up with a screenplay for a new Alien Nation film, and it's recruited Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who co-penned the first Iron Man. Alien Nation Is Getting Remade, Get The Details

26 March 2015 1:00 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's likely that one day we will see remakes of every single genre movie released in the 1980s, and apparently the next title in line for a modern update is the Graham Baker-directed sci-fi flick Alien Nation. A new version of the story is now in development at 20th Century Fox, and the studio has hired two new screenwriters to help make the feature a reality. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Fox has given the job to Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the screenwriters best known for penning the first Iron Man movie all the way back in 2008. Right now, very few details are available about the Alien Nation remake, but the trade does mention two interesting tidbits. For starters, the movie is being looked at as the launching point for a franchise not unlike the one that has grown out of the rebooted Planet of the Apes. »

Fox Developing Remake Of 80s Sci-Fi Movie Alien Nation

26 March 2015 12:25 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Depending on your personal sway when it boils down to remakes, you may be jumping for joy at today’s news or shrugging your shoulders in apathy. The next property mined from the back catalogue of Films That Are Fine As They Are hails from The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd, whose 1988 movie Alien Nation has been selected for renovation.

A sci-fi buddy cop movie with a heavy social conscience, the plot revolved around a future Earth recently beset upon by aliens. In an attempt to get along, humans and aliens – who look like people with shoddy prosthetics – integrate and begin to live somewhat harmoniously. James Caan starred as a prejudiced cop whose new partner, played by Mandy Patinkin, is an extraterrestrial called Sam Francisco. A reasonable success at the time, it managed to inspire a short-lived TV series, a brief comic run and several TV movies.

Fox Plans Remake of 80s Sci-Fi 'Alien Nation' from 'Iron Man' Writers

There's another remake of an 80s sci-fi property on the way to the big screen. THR reports the Alien Nation, the film from Aliens and "The Walking Dead" producer Gale Anne Hurd, will get the remake treatment from 20th Century Fox. As of now, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who wrote the first film in the Iron Man franchise, launching Marvel Studios cinematic universe, will write the film, but there's no director or producer on board just yet. The original film took place in the near future at a time when humans and a race of aliens are forced to co-exist, though people of Earth treat the visitors like second class citizens. The aliens are segregated and not given the same rights as people. But the story focuses on the first alien police officer (Mandy Patinkin) who is paired with an insensitive partner (James Caan) who is not keen on working with his species. »

20th Century Fox have hired "Iron Man" scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the script for a reboot of the late 1980s sci-fi feature "Alien Nation".

The original film was set in 1991, when alien refugees had come to Earth three years before and were now attempting to integrate into Los Angeles.

Late 1980s sci-fi movie Alien Nation is to get a remake.

20th Century Fox is developing a new version of the 1988 Gale Anne Hurd film, with Iron Man's Art Marcum and Matt Holloway writing the script, states The Hollywood Reporter.

The original film was set in a near future where humans and aliens begrudgingly co-exist, with the new race being segregated without rights.

The first film saw Homeland's Mandy Patinkin play the alien officer, while James Caan played the human.

20th Century Fox is developing a reboot of the 1988 sci-fi movie Alien Nation, with Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway coming aboard to write the screenplay. The project doesn't have a producer on board at this stage. The studio is envisioning a re-imagining of the original movie, with the hopes of starting a franchise similar to their rebooted Planet of the Apes movies.

The original Alien Nation was set in a future where humans and an alien race were forced to co-exist with each other, as the humans keep the alien species segregated from the general population with very little rights. The plot followed the first ever alien police officer (Mandy Patinkin) on Earth, who is paired up with a racially-biased cop (James Caan). Fox Wants To Revisit The Alien Nation

25 March 2015 8:34 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Alien Nation arrived in cinemas in 1988, using a sci-fi concept of aliens integrating into human society to explore ideas of immigration, segregation, culture clash and slavery wrapped in a mismatched buddy cop action film starring James Caan as human cop Matthew Sykes and Mandy Patinkin as “Newcomer” detective Samuel “George” Francisco. The film spawned a TV series, which ran for a season and a few TV movies. Now 20th Century Fox is looking to revisit the idea with Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The story of the original saw Sykes dealing with his own prejudice towards the Newcomers, a sentiment shared by many humans wary of the outsiders, who have strange customs (they get drunk on sour milk, for example) and are largely forced to stay within their own communities.According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plan is to re-envision the movie from the ground up in »
