Comedy Roasts That Took It Too Far

25 May 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Saying the words "Friar's Club" without scaring away millennials who only speak in memes. Making the celeb in the chair feel honored, but just humbled enough to not jump out a window. Showcasing TV-friendly material that has enough foul language to make Quentin Tarantino blush: The comedic roast walks a whole lot of fine lines -- it's just part of the delicate mix of sick burns, underhanded compliments, and unthinkable vocabulary that makes up the cocktail. But sometimes when you shake that cocktail, it explodes right in your face. Pause to remember five roasts that did just that, and had viewers wincing between the laughs all the way.

Justin Bieber: Too Fast, Too Furious, Too Soon

The 2015 Comedy Central roast of Justin Bieber should've been a momentous occasion -- yeah, it's weird that the Biebs got roasted in the first place, but at least we can all laugh at »

‘Nina’ Review: Zoe Saldana, What Happened to Your Miss Simone Biopic?

18 April 2016 10:15 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Nina,” an infuriatingly amateurish picture about the great singer and pianist Nina Simone, is a new low for the musical biopic genre. First time writer-director Cynthia Mort, whose main experience is as a writer on the sitcoms “Roseanne” and “Will & Grace,” unforgivably exploits Simone’s memory and name with a movie that plays like a sketch comedy parody of the worst possible Nina Simone biopic. No one involved seems to have a clue who Simone was or what she stood for. Mort has said that she could not get financing for “Nina” when she submitted the names of her preferred. »

‘Staggered’ Chuck Lorre Inducted Into Nab Broadcasting Hall of Fame

18 April 2016 3:38 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Through more than 30 years in television, Chuck Lorre has risen to the top of the TV comedy business, collected multiple awards, and seen his shows and his characters enter American pop culture. On Monday, he was inducted into the Nab Hall of Fame.

But his favorite moment is much more personal.

Minutes after leaving the podium, Lorre told Variety about the moment that still gives him chills, all these years later. It was when he first joined “Roseanne,” during its third season, when it was the No. 1 show on TV.

“I went to the first rehearsal of the first script that I was involved with. There was a scene with John Goodman and Roseanne and Laurie Metcalf, and I remember they’re playing out the scene, and I turned to my friend who was the executive producer on the show, my boss, and I whispered ‘They’re saying what we wrote. »

Box Office Democracy: 10 Cloverfield Lane

15 March 2016 5:30 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

I am not prepared to be this afraid of John Goodman.

I don’t remember a time in my life before the Roseanne show. It was a staple growing up, even if I didn’t start watching it regularly until the last few seasons. John Goodman is a lovable funnyman, and no amount of playing shady characters in Coen Brothers movies was ever going to shake me of that conviction. I was not prepared for the sheer mesmerizing terror that was Goodman’s performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane, a role I never would have expected for him but one that he embodies so totally and perfectly that pushes everything to another level. This is the kind of performance that should win awards but never will because every award-giving body has decided to become self-parody at this point and only send home statues for ludicrous acting clichés.

10 Cloverfield Lane: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Interview

Last weekend Flickering Myth was given the opportunity to view a press screening of 10 Cloverfield Lane and interview stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and director Dan Trachtenberg in a roundtable discussion with other journalists. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was charming and spoke highly of her passion for the project, her regard for Goodman and Trachtenberg as well as other interests she has. Its clear from her personality that she is a bright, talented young woman who has a real love for acting and pushing the boundaries of film. You can read our review here and check back later for our interview with Goodman and Trachtenberg!

Minor spoilers follow for 10 Cloverfield Lane so if you want to avoid any other information (which I recommend) check back after you’ve seen the movie.

John Goodman on his awkward Kristen Wiig encounter: 'I'll never speak to her again'

7 March 2016 4:15 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

John Goodman was the big guest on today's Howard Stern Show, and the sleepy-voiced Roseanne icon was endearing, forthright and funny throughout. During the sit-down he opened up about his struggles with alcoholism, related feeling like an outsider on the Hollywood scene and, hilariously, forgot not only the name of his 10 Cloverfield Lane co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead but the title of the 1999 film he made with Martin Scorsese. Also: why he feels he let SNL down during his last guest-hosting appearance. Here are all the highlights from the chat. His attempt at conversation with Kristen Wiig at a social gathering didn't go well. "She was talking to somebody else, and I was just -- I think she's so great, and the social barriers broke down and I interrupted the conversation. And I would just hate for somebody to do that to me. And she goes, 'yeah, I'll talk to you in a minute. »

'Big Bang Theory' Evolution: How TV's Nerdy Comedy Grew Into a Family Show

24 February 2016 12:56 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

CBS' The Big Bang Theory wasn't envisioned as a traditional family comedy. But that's precisely what the nerdy show that could has become as the series, created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, approaches its landmark 200th episode. When Lorre (Two and a Half Men, Roseanne) and Prady pitched Big Bang Theory, the series — which started out as a spec — was about quantum physicists/string theory guys and their lives. To hear Lorre tell it, that statement alone was enough to elicit a slack jawed "What?!" response from network and studio development executives.  "A show about brilliant minds
