The Nostalgia Fact-Check is a recurring Vulture feature in which we revisit a seminal movie, TV show, or album that reflexively evinces an "Oh my God, that was the best ever!" response by a certain demographic, owing to it having been imprinted on them early. Now, years later, we will take a look at these classics in a more objective, unforgiving adult light: Are they really the best ever? How do they hold up now? We've already reconsidered a number of once-beloved entertainments. This week, we consider the seminal working woman sitcom Murphy Brown. Background: It was twenty years ago this month that Vice-President Dan Quayle made moronic-election-narrative history by giving a speech in which he essentially blamed the recent Los Angeles riots on Murphy Brown. “Bearing babies irresponsibly is, simply, wrong,” Quayle told his California audience. “It doesn't help matters when prime-time TV has Murphy Brown — a character who »

The fate of Gcb, one of our favorite new shows, will be decided in the next few weeks, and right now, there's a 50/50 chance it'll survive. If it does get canceled, at least it'll instantly become a member of what we'll call the Arrested Development/Freaks & Geeks/Firefly club. Shows that were canceled before their time, and have gained cult status since they left the airwaves.
All of those programs have rabid enthusiastic followers, and in the case of Firefly and Arrested Development, that fan enthusiasm has directly led to big screen resurrections.
We're hoping Gcb gets a renewal, but while we wait, let's take a look at a few other shows throughout the years that were unfairly snuffed out, and picture ... what might have been.

It appears the resurrection of TV shows won't be limited to Fox bringing back animated series like Family Guy or Comedy Central breathing new life into Futurama. At least that will be the case of Murphy Brown creator Diane English has her way as the writer is currently talking with CBS about potentially bringing back the series for just a few episodes during this election year. While at the TV Land Awards, English told TV Guide that she's been talking to both the network and star Candice Bergen about coming back to TV for some political satire fun. She says, "We're having a little conversation with CBS about a few episodes, and I think it's possible. Candice knows about it, and we're going to talk to her more in July once she wraps her Broadway play ['The Best Man.']" Hit the jump for more. Honestly, coming back for a few episodes seems like a bit of a gimmick, »

Murphy Brown creator Diane English tells TV Guide that she's been in discussion with CBS about reviving the newsroom satire that wasn't afraid to call Dan Quayle stupid, bringing that same fearlessness to modern-day easy targets in a handful of election-year specials. Those talks are entirely preliminary, of course, though English says she thinks "it's possible," adding that after Candice Bergen's current Broadway run wraps in July, she plans to discuss with her further the idea of returning and reminding fans just how long ago the '90s were and how incredibly old they are now. Kelly Ripa hosted the 2012 TV Land Awards and for her second time as hostess with the mostess, she offered up a hilarious opening sketch that featured her trying on different personas - from "Star Trek" to Tootie to Morticia Addams. We think our favorite was Cher.
She ends up going with a Catwoman catsuit, complete with awesome old-school "Batman" title cards and voiceover. Ripa also came flying into the awards show in her catsuit, much to the delight of the audience members below.
Did you watch the 10th anniversary TV Land Awards? This year the awards honored "Laverne & Shirley," "In Living Color," "Murphy Brown," "One Day at a Time" and "Pee-Wee's Playhouse," plus Aretha Franklin for the Icon award. Fun stuff. »

Kelly Ripa frantically picked from several different costumes for her job as TV Land host for 2012. She chose from seemingly countless options for her hosting gig for the night, for the awards show. The ceremony, which taped earlier this month in New York, honored the casts of "Laverne & Shirley," "Murphy Brown," "In Living Color," "One Day At a Time" and "Pee-wee's Playhouse." In the opening segment from the 10th Annual TV Land Awards the perky blonde Ripa and Carson Kressley search for the perfect look for the host to wear to greet the audience. Kelly tries and array of choices, and as it is "TV Land", she tries out the looks of past and present TV icons from Cher to Tootie from "The Facts of Life." She tries on costumes for Wonder Woman, Sue Sylvester, Daisy Duke, "New Girl's" Jess and so many more before she makes a decision. »

In so much as I was ever raised, I was raised on television. So I once again had a total blast working on "The TV Land Awards " that airs tonight on TV Land at 9 p.m./8 Cst. Beautifully hosted by Kelly Ripa -- who I first fell in love with on TV -- this year's show features cast reunions from the stars of Murphy Brown, Laverne & Shirley, In Living Color and One Day At A Time. Pee Wee Herman is also honored, as is The Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, who performs wonderfully and, yes, soulfully. In honor of this grand annual TV event that celebrates TV so well, here's my playlist for tonight's great TV party. As always please add your own tubular tracks below.
