Three Summers review – Ben Elton's folk music festival comedy misses a few notes

14 August 2017 7:42 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A roll call of Australian talent fills out this slight and sunny love story but while the jokes arrive at a steady pace, more than a few fall short of their mark

If a Western Australian folk music festival seems like a left-field setting for a film by Ben Elton – once a premier humorist of Britain’s grimy absurdities in shows including The Young Ones and Blackadder – bear in mind that the comedian has held dual citizenship in Australia since 2004, taking up residence in Fremantle with his Australian wife.

A slight and sunny love story, Three Summers is set over three consecutive iterations of the fictional Westifal music festival (slogan: “Let’s get folked up”). MisfitsRobert Sheehan and Home and Away’s Rebecca Breeds star as the prospective partners. She’s a boot-stamping, fiddle-playing folk chick; he’s a know-it-all muso with a passion for the theremin. Hounds of Love..

In a David and Goliath battle, the screenplays for Ben Young.s debut feature Hounds of Love and Mel Gibson.s Hacksaw Ridge will compete for the original feature film prize at this year.s Awgie Awards.

That pits a low-budgeted film scripted by Young, which has grossed $125,000 in three weeks at six Australian cinemas, against the $US40 million WW2 drama written by Andrew Knight with Robert Schenkkan, which has amassed $US175.3 million worldwide.

There is only one nomination for the feature film adaptation category so the winner almost certainly will be Luke Davies for Lion, based on Saroo Brierley.s memoir.

Transilvania 2017: Hounds Of Love review: Dir. Ben Young (2017)

7 June 2017 7:46 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Hounds Of Love review: Fresh from its debut internationally at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, and then its UK debut at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival in the UK, comes this hard-hitting thriller fro Australia and filmmaker Ben Young.

Hounds Of Love review by Paul Heath at the 2017 Transilvania International Film Festival.

Hounds Of Love review

Australian filmmaker Ben Young lands a huge sucker punch in Transilvania with the debut of his thriller Hounds Of Love, a taut, harrowing and indeed gripping tale full of unrelenting psychological and physical torture from the outset.

The setting for the film is Perth in Western Australia in the late 1980s. We open to a stylish slow motion tracking shot, seemingly from a moving vehicle, the camera pointed towards a school playground, a group of girls engaged in a game of netball. The shot lingers before cutting to uncomfortable close-ups of their legs and »

It was third time lucky when Mel Gibson signed on to Hacksaw Ridge in 2014, having been offered the film by producer Bill Mechanic twice before.

.I approached Mel in 2002, in 2010, and then again in 2014, which is the first time he said yes,. says Mechanic..

.He's the only one I approached twice. I guess in my mind he was always the perfect director for it. I just had to get it in his mind that he was the perfect director for it..

Before his third attempt, Mechanic brought on Randall Wallace, who wrote Braveheart, to take a pass at the script.

.Randall's changes were not earth shattering,. says Mechanic. .He won't be credited in the final screenplay. But I think it might have made it more appealing to Mel to read [that] Randy was working on it..
