Storyline

"Family Feud" was one of the most popular game shows on TV, but after nine years with Richard Dawson as host, ratings were starting to slip. In 1986, producers decided that the "Family Feud" needed a makeover, and they wanted a fresh face to breathe new life into this old favorite. "Family Feud" producer Howard Felsher remembered hearing great things about a talented young comic named Ray Combs. The late Mark Goodson chose Ray to host "The New Family Feud." It was a perfect match. Ray's down-home love for people was genuine. But pressures began to amount in 1994 as ratings on "Family Feud" began to slide following the death of Mark Goodson. Son, Jonathan Goodson and consultant Harris Kattleman decided to bring back original host Richard Dawson to try and boost ratings, but a drab set covering, low prize money and bad timeslots forced "Family Feud" back onto the shelf in 1995. Trivia

When Richard Dawson returned to the syndicated edition of the show in the fall of 1994 the show received a lot of changes. The set was now the one used in the Opryland special with glass blocks added to the board and the family name displays. The music was updated with a new rock remix of "The Feud" and brand new opening music. The show was expanded from 30 minutes to one hour. However, most stations decided to only air the second half of the show. The "Bullseye" round became the "Bankroll" game with a maximum of $7,000 to be won in the first half of the show and $14,000 in the second half. The number of players on each team was reduced from five to four and the time limits in "Fast Money" were increased from 15 seconds and 20 seconds to 20 seconds and 25 seconds. See more »

Quotes

Ray Combs: You need 105 points. If 105 people said milk, out of a survey of 100 people , this show is illegal, and we're all going to be on a documentary in 20 years.

Not as good as the first, but not bad!
28 July 2001 | by (midwest) – See all my reviews

Being a child of the 80s, I grew up on this version and enjoyed it very much. It was a fun game and Ray was an entertaining host. Then last year I got Game Show Network, started watching Richard's version, and thought it was better. However, I still don't think this was a bad second version; Ray ranks up there with Bert Convy (on Super Password) as one of the best replacement hosts. The only thing that bugs me is that sometimes Ray gets hung up on being funny and not concentrating on the game, but it's not that annoying. You want annoying? Check out the Louie Anderson version.

This version of a truly classic game show is definitely worth watching. It's too bad Mr. Combs decided to take his own life; I've always wanted to see a hosting duel between he and Richard. Who'd win????
